costs for my daughter to learn to drive?

My dd is coming up for 17.She would like to learn to drive.

As its years since I learnt I was wondering what is involved and how much does it cost?

Can I still send off for a provisional license before she is 17? What does it cost?

She thinks her dad is buying her a car. I have told her that I cannot afford to run it and he would need to meet all costs. He is a very high earner so I think he could afford the cost. She also thinks he is paying for the lessons

I would like to offer contribute something though, even if its only the license and tests.

The most valuable thing you can offer your daughter is your time, patience, and nerves of steel, to sit in the car with her and let her practice as much as possible inbetween lessons!

Try and take her out a couple of times a week for an hour.

As far as I remember you can apply for a provisional license 3 months before you turn 17 cant remember how much it is as it changes every year nearly mine was around £35 about 4 years ago the tests are due to go up soon as it stand at the moment the theory is 35 (well it was last Jan) and the actual test is either 60 for non peak time tests (day time weekday) and 70 for peak time (after 4 or 5 pm and on the weekend) + 2 hours driving lesson time for use of the instructors car, although Im not sure if it changes from area to area.

Oh forgot to mention the reccomendations from the DSA if i remember correctly are that you have something like 100 hours (I have a feeling its more than that) driving before you take your test both in lessons with your instructor and privatly although many people don't need that much and many people need a lot more.

Hiya, I have just been through this as DD1 passed test just before Christmas.

The provisional licence is about £50 - you can apply online - and you can apply up to one month before her 17th birthday, although it will not be valid until here birthday. You need a passport style photo to send away, or can put in her passport number if it is reasonably recent and they can use that photo.

The lessons were £24 per hour - this is average for this area (South east) and then her test was £59 but remember that you also have to pay the instructor for the use of their car for an hour for the test if using their car, and DD had a lesson before so the test cost around £100 all told.

She is a very lucky girl if her father buys her a car - my DD had some money left by my grandmother and used that. She has also paid her own insurance and taxed it herself. The insurance went up £116 once she'd passed her test so be aware of that.

As she runs DD2 and DS to school each morning I give her £10 pw petrol money but the rest of it is up to her.

If your DD doesn't work, and her father doesn't intend to pay all of the running costs, I would think long and hard about how she is going to run (and maintain) the car. It is very bizzare having my DD quote petrol prices at local garages to me :rotfl:

Hi not sure what a license is these days - £30-40? The practical test is £56-67 (depending on weekday/weekend) and with use of the instructors car and a lesson beforehand it amounts to about £100! The theory test is about £30 I think.

Lessons :eek: are around £25 an hour. How many she will need will depend on how much private practice she can get - the more the better obviously.

I didn't learn until this year, aged 28, but it seems the younger you do it the quicker and easier - and therefore cheaper - it is!

Son learnt year before last, He applied for provisional licence three months before he turned 17( cost approx £60). He booked the theory test for a week or two after he turned 17 (approx £50). We agreed to pay £400 of lessons. The first hour was free, then this gave him about 20 lessons. He had two hourly slots once a week. He took his first test (approx £50) and failed. He took a six month break and went with a new instructor. He paid for about another 10 lessons, took test again and passed. ( another approx £250). He found a car on ebay R reg Rover 214 ( He paid £600) and insurance was approx £2000. ( Road tax £120 after having it four months - MOT £50, no problems after six months) Hope this helps, DD turns 17 in may so will have this all over again!

Just doing this with my ds1(17)
a provisional licence is £50
lesson's can cost anything from £17 to £25 (block booking 10 at a time can be cheaper)
Theory test £30
practical test weekday £56.50 weekend and weekday evening £67.
You can apply for a provisional licence I think 3 months before the 17th birthday
Insurance is very expensive though, we got a quote on a little Fiesta the other day the cheapest was £1400.00 and the most expensive was £3500.00

my son has had 40 lessons so far cost £720.00 and passed his theory and is due to take his practical in 2 weeks so if he passes up to that point it will have cost us £806.50
