Other people have given details of the costs of lessons etc. The best thing you could do would be to give her your time and sit with her whilst she practices. The more time she spends practicing, the less lessons she will need, the less it will cost and the sooner she will be ready to take her test.

I think they say you need 45hours of lessons. I'm going to learn to drive once my OH has learned, he just did his theory test which was £35.
I think we may go for the week long intensive course. You pay a big chunk of money, I think it's around £500ish, and you sit your test at the end of the week (and hopefully pass!)

Funny story though, when we bought OH's provisional license last year (£45) a few weeks after receiving it and them cashing the cheque, they sent US a cheque for £45.....so he got it for free?! Same happened with my Uncle.

Not very relevant but had to add that I finally passed last year (age 25) after over 100 lessons and four test - total cost approx £2700!! Scary!

I think they say you need 45hours of lessons.

This seems pretty high to me.

IIRC I had two blocks of 10 hours (taken as 2hour lessons) and a two hour lesson including my test. (that was at the age of 19-20ish I think). I think there's supposed to be a rule of thumb that the number of lessons is something like 1-1.5x your age. I don't know too many people who took more than 30-40 hours.

There's obviously variation, though, for instance women tend to take longer than men, certain schools are more hesitant (or just worse) than others, some people have "natural ability" and so on.

Anyway, I think I calculated the total cost as something like £750 at the time - was paying £27/hour for lessons, less one or two pounds for block booking, both licenses, theory and practical (both passed 1st time).
  • I pay £20 for an hours lesson. I could get it cheaper by block booking but I get on really well with my instructor and he's really good at his job so i would rather pay a few quid more.

I had lessons before aged18 but didn't get on with my first instructor, it took over 10 years to get the confidence back to try again! So I would say get your daugter to have a few free introduction lessons with different instructors and then choose the one she feels most comfortable with.
  • It's so expensive in the UK.

Here, you have a mandatory 30 hours of theory training, plus mandatory 30 hours of driving practice. The costs, all in, including test - come to less than 300 pounds. If you need to resit the test, then it works out about 20 pounds each time.

The books are sitting just there on the floor.

Yeah 45hours seems very high to me aswell, It's what it said on the theory DVD, that OH had.
One of OH's friends passed his test with 10lessons (1hour long) but to be fair, he grew up on a farm, so was used to driving things around!

One of my friends, he took 45 lessons, I was a bit shocked, but then he admitted that each of those lessons were 2hours long:eek: I can't even imagine to calculate the cost of that......

I guess if you have a rubbish teacher that may hamper you, or if you aren't very confident (like I would be!)
  • I had 21 hours of lessons and passed first time. My oldest daughter was not a natural (!) although she did pass first time, but mostly because she kept putting off applying for the test and had about 50 hours of lessons. My youngest daughter has taken to it much more quickly and is about to book her test after 20 hours of lessons.

I think you need to clarify with her dad whether he is willing to pay indefinitely until she passes her test, or if he's putting limits on how much he's willing to spend as the cost of lessons could vary hugely depending on how many she has, and how many times she fails.

    Everyones different.

I had 4 hours (2 x 2hour lessons) a week for about 8 weeks. Plus after 2 weeks of lessons I drove my dad EVERYWHERE. I was his personal taxi, which at times was annoying but the practice was brilliant. This included night driving, country lane drivnig and dual carriage way (with 3 lanes) driving :)

I took my theory on my 17th birthday, best to get it out the way!

I would reccomend getting her the theory test computer discs, mine were so handy :)

Glad I'm not the only one who found test number four the charm ;)

Just to add to what people have said about the theory, I would suggest looking on eBay for dvds, games, books etc as obviously once you pass people generally don't want them so they go for a fair price.
