ahhhhh.. am I being thick? I can't stop it saving as a .doc but there's not selection to de-select Microsoft Word to edit email messages!

I like having all my account go through my outlook.. it's on the only way I can keep tabs.. but does that mean they don't close your email account?

No they don't. Anyone with any ISP can have one free email account with BT.
