How do you make transition from one provider to another?

I have just read the new update on the cheepest broadband provider. I currently use Wanadoo for £17.99 per month and I am getting so much spam as someone is using my address to spam. Its a good idea to change but I need my internet connection every day because I sell on Ebay. If I cancel with Wanadoo I don't want to be waiting for days until my new provider kicks in. Is it an easy process?

Ian.

    Two issues here....

    1. If its just the email thats a problem, and you are happy with your current internet service, then just sign-up for a free email service. For example, Gmail (or GoogleMail, as its known in the UK now) - this comes with web based access or POP3 & SMTP access, and 1GB of storage.

    2. If you do want to move to a different ISP, then ask Wanadoo (subject to you being outside your minimum contract period, normally 12 months) for a MAC (Migration Authorisation Code). This MAC should be supplied within 5 working days or so, and is valid for 30 days. You can then give this MAC to your new provider when you order (placing a "migration" order, rather than a new activation order). What this does is enable you to transfer your service to the new ISP with a matter of minutes downtime (in practice I find its less than 2 minutes downtime, but it could be anywhere up to a few hours).

    Hope that covers everything ;)

After you get your MAC I suggest you go to https://www.adslguide.org and there you can read about all the ISPs [including wanadoo] and make up your mind from there. Two ISPs that are getting good reviews at present are idnet and newnet.

Ok thanks. I know Madasafish are offering a £13.99 per month contarct 8 meg speed which is fantastic but for £1 a month more, another company are offering unlimited downloads. Perhaps its worth paying a little extra.
