Although this sounds like a nice idea, especially when those ignorant customers are breathing down on your shoulder, to ignorant move whilst you are using your card for minor amounts, it will be a neat and useful idea.

It's been out in London for a long time. BarclayCard debuted a joint contactless debit/Oyster train card.

Barclaycard OnePulse is a credit card, not a debit card.

Am I the only one to think this is a horrendous idea?

Imagine if someone stole your card and in the time taken for you to realise it's been nicked, you could have potentially lots of cash spent on your card without a PIN?

10% of transactions needing a PIN means 90% of transactions WITHOUT.

I really hope Nationwide don't offer this. If they do, they'll either have to offer me an opt-out facility, or I will give up my debit card and go back to a cash card.
I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂

On the site it says when you are sent a new card it will have this technology, it is up to you whether you use it or not. That was under the question what if you don't want it, personally I think they should offer two types as I never thought about someone being able to use your card and buy things under £10 without needing the pin. But it would take quite a while to mount up any kind of major debt by doing that though...

My argument would be, however, is that the bank would probably offer no protection for PIN-less swipes if your card was nicked, as how can they prove negligence on the account holders side?

  • I'm just waiting for some shops to actually accept the thing. I have used it in one shop, it took longer than using the normal chip and pin as we both had to figure out how to get the thing to work, I guess they'll get used to it though!
  • All contactless payments have fraud protection I believe, besides if you don't ever use it, no one else will ever be able to use it as it requires the PIN the first time you use it.

It is supposed to but neither of the people I know who used it the first time were asking to put in a PIN it just worked, they had however already made a Chip and PIN transaction with the card and wondered if this superceeded the contactless pin requests.
  • Ah ok, I have contactless card but haven't use that functionality yet.
