Do you think there is enough info in this thread to make that assumption, similarly the assumption of 50% drops cries across this board.

    No.

But then I wasn't talking specifically, and mean no offnc to Maisie, I took th figures banded about about Maisie's house without rfering actually to her home, which I have never seen. Having never seen Maisie's house (nor the url to the agent's page that I can recall...or was it once posted?) I cannot possibly guage what I think it would be worth in comparison to othrs in her market.

Thus while the info about wage and multiples and availablity s all pretty theortical it adds to th pictur about availablity and afford ability...in theory!:D Its intresting that this coupl could b earning, and spending, a similar amount in less 'posh' but similarly London commutable areas and expect a lot less, I imagine in Maisie's lovley area th picture for buyrs, not just ftb but the buyers that Maisie and her OH would have been in 99 is ven less affordable, as Maisi's expectations show. :)

    Where did £750k come from?

To wrap this up. If we dont think it is worth moving we wont. It is really nothing to do with insisting on a high selling price. We cannot force people to buy our house. We plan to keep our mortgage as it is and release some cash but we dont need to immediately if at all. The recession wont last forever. My job is as safe as it can be. My husband is OK too. It could make sense in this tricky market to keep our current house and enjoy it. I wonder if we were just looking too far ahead and trying to get even more cash behind us and the panic has now stopped. Sorry Carolt your bargain has just disappeared.

    Oh no, I am gutted.

Because I just dreamt of moving to S Buckinghamshire.

Out of interest, are all the people there that smug, or is it just you?

Why on earth would I want your poxy, overpriced house?

Just amused that you imagine that you can deduce from the fact that you don't actually want/need to sell your house to = no-one in the UK will want/need to sell their house and therefore prices will not fall.

Whether you like it or not, house prices have fallen approx one-fifth across the country from peak - and yes, that's S Bucks too. And even the most moderate of vested interests agree on a minimum 10% fall this year. Let alone after that.

Where I live, as I posted on another thread, a house I have my eye on has fallen by approx 25-30% from peak.. That's what I care about. As nothing on earth would make me want to live in S Bucks, its house prices personally matter as much to me as house prices in India. I just dislike reading smug self-satisfied gloating posted as advice on a money-saving site.

Why am I smug? Is it because I dont know whether house prices will fall or rise over the next 10 years. If you feel you have that skill you will become a multi millionaire and buy 10 houses like mine. You dont happen to be a left wing Labour voter who thinks everyone should be entiled to the same thing.

I get the impression you are a serial renter and you will stay that way until the end of time

Is there anything wrong with being a renter?
Is there anything wrong with being a home owner?

No difference to me, we are all people who do the best we can with what we have...be that in rented or owned, it doesn't make someone a lesser person.

I rent, I used to own...we got burnt in the last recession. It took our house 10 years to get back to the price we paid for it and we didn't even buy at the top of the market, that was 14 years.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

I get the impression that you are...no, it's unprintable. :)

And yes, I do 'know' house prices wll fall from current levels - I'd happily bet you the value of your house on that.

If you really imagine that the falls stop here, you're even stupider than I thought

No, to Maisie people 'are' renters or home-owners. Renting or buying a house isn't something people do.

    It defines their caste.

Something tells me she's a dyed-in-the-wool Tory who'd probably scream if she saw a nasty renter and hide in the corner in case it bit her or something.

Thank goodness for HPI - at least those nasty lower-caste people can't come and buy in my street.

And maybe if I send my children to private school, I can ensure they never, ever have to mix with any poor people either.

Oh Carol, that is below you

I know Tories who rent (in fact I know stockbrokers, succsful ones, who rent), and private school is hardly a crime, even if not to your political tastes. Its also fair to say some staunch labour pople own/rent/both! I don't disagree this is an ideological issue, however.

Have I said that the falls will stop or that I 'know' that prices will increase. I cannot possibly know any of this and neither can you. You want them to keep falling because you feel you 'deserve' a better house in the area of your choice. Will the house of your dreams become within your reach - I dont know. So, the whole of South Bucks is unacceptable - what a silly thing to say.

I've got absolutely nothing against private school, or people who send their children to private school. Lots of friends etc..... Not to my taste but nothing against it.

It was the poster's attitudes to me, and renters in general, I objected to, not the choice of school.
