I have a feeling if I said I was brought up by a stockbroker father and a stay at home Mum and went to private school you would say 'I knew you had that background'.
I still say - I was responding to people's questions, ie equity, value of house, earnings etc. I am sorry if the answers werent to your likely but they are facts.0 -
Ladies, I think this conversation has ran its course.
It is obvious that you both have different perspectives on things and are unlikely to become bosom buddies after this "chat". For the sake of the other memebers of this forum perhaps it would be best to finish here and allow this post to return to the original subject.
Thank you.0 -

I apprciate your answers. I think its a bit like you are looking down a hill at how you got where you are, I am looking up the home ownership hill
The view is inevitably different, but its interesting to try and see what you see
FWIW no attack from me over th private school...I'll be doing that if we have a child too, and I think, TBF to her, Carolt has said the same.0 -
Do I ..don't I??.......get entangled in this thread....cos I live my life on both sides of the fence....it feels quite odd too. I rent and I own (shared with the bank of course)
I have mates with Maisie-lives and ones with Carol-lives too...and I live inbetween....that's called My life.
The whole schooly issue is such a strange phenonemon (Davesnave can check the spelling)......its really gets people going. I am too embarrassed to tell people I pay for school nowadays...but years back, it wasn't seen as status thingy at all....it was just accepted that if one lived in 3rd worst borough in UK and chose to spend £££ on education rather than hols, better house etc. it was a choice and based on affordability....not done through any kind of snobbery or anything.
OK, I got a bit lucky and my son got a scholarship which helped, but, I did live in an area where the secondary school that was in our catchment wasn't great (19% pass @ GCSE back then I think + security guards....to make the parents feel better??)
I am going off to have a coffee and an illicit ciggie (the handy thing about living between 2 homes...when OH is away I can sneak a smoke) to decide whether to jump in .......or not.0 -
Funnily enough, I was feeling guilty for being a bit harsh on you earlier. Now I'm inclined to think it was entirely proportionate.
:rotfl:
Pull the other one, it's got bells on it.
BTW can I just disagree with those moaning about this thread. I love it!
Seconds out..... round 2! :T0 -
No, I do feel guilty.
Don't know why, but I do find her kind of snobbery really gets on my nerves.
But I agree, I probably went too far on a personal level.
FWIW, the school part was purely off the cuff riffing - I REALLY DO HAVE NOTHING AT ALL AGAINST PRIVATE SCHOOLS OR PEOPLE WHO SEND THEIR CHILDREN TO THEM!!!!
Sorry to shout, but I think this got a bit misunderstood.
I quite understand any parent wanting to do the best for their children.
Happy to call it a day. Thanks to the mysterious Mrs J. :T
Sorry to disappoint, JonnyBravo.0 -

Congratulations - sincere - for achieving your own goals and dreams.
Hope it all works out for you.0 -
With regards to education, if I had the money I would not hesitate to send my children to a fee paying school.
It's nothing against the schools my children go to, who have been absolutely wonderful but more about the quality, extra chances and choices available, something which the state sector just cannot afford despite the individual schools best efforts.
I have been called a snob, in fact I class myself as a snob yet I am one of those regularly seen by society as a whole as being in the lowest class of all.....still doesn't stop my expensive taste (on a budget), expensive eye or aspirations. We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -
Thank you Carolt. I know things got a little heated. Sometimes I pinch myself with regard to the house, private education etc. I never saw myself achieving this.
I am really just an ordinary women who has had a few lucky breaks (one of which was meeting my lovely husband) and who managed to make the right decisions on occasion. We both have to work full time to afford our lifestyle but I work for a company that really encourages flexible working so that helps.
South Bucks is really nice although I was brought up in West London and do miss the vibrancy of the city. South Bucks IS a bit up itself to be honest but it is a very convienent place to live if you work in London. You can pretend that you are in the country but arent really. Lots of yummy mummies at the school gates who must get up at the crack of dawn to look as glam as they do. Not me sadly but everyone should feel that their ambitions are within their reach. If that means changing jobs or moving to another area then so be it. We have one son at boarding school and one who probably wont suit that environment so we might move then and if we get a reduced price for the house then so be it. It might be that our choice of schools is a little ambitious but I am determined to try and make this work. Also we are in our late forties and if you cant live out your ambitions now when can you.
Also, I intend to leave next to nothing when I pop off.....0 -
Single Sue
The problem with fee paying schools is that they start off with fairly reasonable rates (as compared to the childcare costs we paid before they started). It then goes up and up and up and by that time you see what a good private school can do. My son has a late August birthday and consequently I think he would struggle at a state school with the big classes, however his current school has absolutely brought out his talents and skills and I am so proud of him. His school will not accept second best or a child who is not trying and the comment he had on his last report was 'he is enjoying boarding a little too much' I dont have an issue with this comment, god, there are much worse things to worry about. It is not a selective school and has a wide intake of abilities.
Also, never say never. You could win the lottery, met and marry a rich man or be left some money (none of this has happened to me but it has to happen to someone!)0
