PC - Low Disk Space

  • Check what sizes you have allowed for cache sizes. Firefox, ie, system restore points etc. I once accidentally altered one of mine and gradually half my compter was made up of system restore points. Also if you have a programme which lists files by size run that. It can reveal cache files you didn't know were there or other large files which could be removed and stored on disc. For instance storing picture files on disks can free up a surprising amount of space. Another thing to check for is whether or not your word processing programme creates an automatic back up file of every document worked on? Removing the back up's can free up some space.
  • open "my computer" change view type to "details".
How large is the disk, how much free space does windows say you have?

Have you recently saved a large volume of MP3s, MP4s, Photos, "watch later" programs from 4od or BBC iPlayer ?

Removing old Java updates may be a good way of getting some space. As far as I can tell you only need to leave the latest one installed to keep Java stuff working.

    Did you run malwarebytes mac?

  • What size of hard drive do you have ? Chances are the drive has gradually filled up due to temp files and cache files and Windows update files and the like. The reason you're sitting at 100% CPU utilisation is because if the HD has 0% free then you have no space for virtual memory so data is constantly being shifted around and read due to this. You need to clear some stuff out. Find one decent sized program in Add/Remove Programs that you don't want anymore and remove it. As soon as you free up some disc space my bet is your problems will vanish. As AlienRik said it COULD be a virus of some sort but clearing up disc space first is far more likely to solve your problem.
  • go to add remove and remove any programs that you dont use before doing anything.

do a filesearch for *.tmp , these are unneeded temp files.

do a filesearch for files larger than 100mb , these can be uncompressed bmp pics , or large downloads that in most cases you wont need or use.Check em out to see if you need them.

Delete all but the last restore point.

lastly ccleaner is your friend , but only if you know how to set it up to work best for you.

If anyone uses your pc for downloading then 1 film will be 650mb+ , or a game is could be in the gigs.Do a file search for *.iso and avi and check the file sizes.
Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Thanks for all the above advice however I am at a stage where I can't even delete anything. I want to remove everything off the PC (important stuff like photos, videos etc) then restore to factory settings but it won't even let me delete one song

    any other ideas?

    Thanks

    Have you defragged the drive?

I've read in your posts that you use ccleaner so that's done.

Restore points? Have you deleted all but the last one? They can take up a sizeable amount of space.

You could use a memory stick, then send entire folders to it by right clicking on the file, then selecting "send to" and then selecting the drive (usually E: ), then when done just delete the file by right clicking on it again and deleting it, assuming it lets you.

Oh and the recycle bin also takes up space - make sure it's emptied first of all.

Little things like these should free some space, but it looks like you have a huge amount in there OR a very small drive to begin with.

    Anyone else has more suggestions?

what happens when you try to delete a simple song?

Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Click DO A SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE (Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)

  • You say you have tried to delete, but fails. Are there any messages displayed when you try to delete?
One location you maybe able to delete files is in the TEMP directories. If you right click My Computer-> System Properties->Advanced and click on Environment variables. You should see two settings, one for the user, and one for system variables. Both are called TEMP, and should point to directories. Check what is in these directories and if you can delete anything there?
