  • I did spend over an hour in one, depending on the bit they're looking at you should be able to negotiate going in feet first or they could rig up a mirror to let you see out of the tube instead of looking at the interior of the thing.
I discovered on the day that i am not claustrophobic.

  • I was put in head first, with a mirror above me, so I could see the operators, who told me before they did each scan and how long it would take, I just counted down the seconds quite slowly, one thousand and one, one thousand and two, and so on. The scan was usually finished before I reached the predicted time, I was left in position until the whole scanning process was completed, which could involve about 10 or more scans, but it is a well lit tunnel, and you just have to kep telling yourself, that all this is going to help you.
Having said all that, my sister, couldn't go through the whole procedure, and was referred to a hospital that could accomodate MRI scanning in a seated position, although, I believe that they are few and far between.

  • I thought I would be clostraphobic but was told it is open both ends,
Just cramped and I listened to music, although it can be noisy there is nothing to harm you,
I just closed my eyes as the others have said.
I have another due on Saturday morning but not worried this time.

I hate being trapped too. I had an MRI Brain Scan a few years ago and it is not nice (not going to say it is!!) and the noise of the banging of the scans is not too nice either but its over quite quickly. One thing, it does not hurt and if you need one then its best to get it done. I hope you go on alright...;)

thanks a lot for the info guys.

i guess ill just try and relax as best as i can and maybe close my eyes so i dont have to see just how enclosed the space is
Imagine lying in bed with your arms at your sides and your legs straight out...and having head phone on listening to some soft music.

Then just close your eyes and imagine you are falling asleep in your bed. Its over before you know it....

Like some others I find closing my eyes and relaxing is the answer with MRI scans, I have had a number of them, without them it is extremely unlikely I would be here so I would suggest they are worth any amount of discomfort but I, for one didn't have any problems at all.

I've got to have one soon, so was pleased to see this thread and the link to the MRI room, it has put my mind at rest, I still won't like it but at least I have idea now of what to expect - thank you!
