The DFW book club!

Right, after a bit of a discussion on the daily chat we've decided to have a go at setting up a DFW book club. I was thinking we could start it from the 1st Feb so that we're doing it in full months, and it gives us a couple of weeks to decide on the first book.

So if people start thinking about a good book for us to read, if you pm me the title and author by the 20th I'll start a poll to decide which one we read.

The book could be a personal favourite, or one that you've been wanting to read for ages. Try not to pick really new ones (after all, this is DFW, there's nothing worse than a book club choosing a book that's only out in hardback so you've got to spend a fortune) or out of print ones (yes that actually happened in one of my RL groups once).

Any questions (I've probably forgotten to explain loads of things!) just ask.
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

Guys I hate to be a kill joy... but this is really not a topic for the DFW forum... Could I suggest starting a thread in the arms or somewhere and then including the link in the heading for each daily thread? Otherwise we end up with a lot of threads on here that are off topic and peoples threads asking for DFW relevant help get lost in the ocean...

    Thanks

    awwww Mrs T.....

but we like it here in DFW-ville and it is moneysaving if we don't buy new books... recycle and reuse n all that!

maybe if we called it DFW moneysaving book club (as suggested by Spud30 in daily chat) so it's obviously more MSE related.....

(it's no more non-DFW than say the running club/diet clubs etc, which are very popular and well they should be cause they are ace! very valuable and not suggesting for a minute that they should be moved or owt...!)

    Ames - your thoughts?

  • count me in please, whereever it ends up. And I think it is a great DFW idea, think of all the things we won't be spending money on whilst we are trying to read the book each month!!

    Great idea.:D

maybe we could do a genre a month....

    jan - murder mystery
    feb - chick lit
    mar - classics
    apr - something blokie

    etc etc

that way we are on a common theme but not necesarily the very same book. And we'll not be buying all the 2nd hand amazon of any one title?

Maybe it could have more of a DFW slant if you set a maximum price to spend on a book? i.e. it has to be something you can get on Amazon for 1p or off Greenmetropolis? or everyone could join their local library if poss? Bit of a challenge to see how cheap you can get that month's book?

I do think that DFW has it's own special atmosphere and it's only natural that people want to share things with the people they 'know' in here, like the daily chat, running club, Slimmers World thread...

I did think about having a virtual prize for whoever gets the book cheapest!

As people said on the daily chat thread, the Arms is a bit harsh to DFW's so their book club isn't really appealing to most people on here.

Maz, I think that's a great idea, except that if people are like me that'll leave them wanting to read all the ones other people talk about!

What do other people think of the suggestions?

How do I change the title of the thread? I was going to change it to the £1 and under title that Maz suggested but I can't figure out how?

ahh but then you have the rest of your month to read it...

anyway, i'd happily stick with 1 title a month, it'll be fun to race to find it! fast readers can always "pass it on" - although book sharing is not allowed is it? so would need to be private arrangement. Might be worth posting up some rules and regulations when we know what's what.......
