Lets look at it this way.

My PO is 1 mile away (+/-). so to drive there and back is 2 miles.

Tax allowance is 40p per mile so there is 80p. Assuming a very cheap wage of £5/hour minimum there and back time ..say..15 mins then thats £1.25.

So we are at £2.05 before we start adding posting and packing costs......

    Yikes I'm raising my P+P fees..........lol.............:rotfl:

    thanks for your input guys.

of course i accepted the "sellers standard rate" of £3-50 before i bid,but i thought the item would have cost them around £1-50ish for postage costs not 64p.

of course when i sell on fleabay,i maybe overcharge 50p or so to cover any mistakes in postage fees.

maybe its time to add in my fuel costs of driving my tank to the local post office! ;)
and dont forget the £20 per hour wage per parcel and then the............and the......and................... ;)

    to add on -

if a seller does say " first class royal mail"

and uses other way to post or posts say 5 days later, I wouldnt be ashamed to ask for some refund, or show my dissatisfaction via the feedback system (may be neutral feedback if the item was excellent?)

if he just says "sellers standard rate"

i would again not expect to receive the item a month later and again would be asking for some kind of compensation (otherwise a not so good feedback)

I agree you should always take p&p into account when deciding max amount you want to pay for an item.

However, recently I bought a very small & light item and p&p was set at £9.99. Seller stated "1st class signed for within 1-2 working days".

According to package when it arrived, it had taken the seller 10 days to post it, and it was in a re-used jiffy bag with a 64p stamp.

I thought p&p was a bit steep when I bid, but still feel I should have got the service I thought I was paying for.

I totally agree with you. You should have got the service you paid for and personally I'd have e-mailed the seller straightaway and asked for a part refund. Also I'd have stated in my feedback that the seller doesn't post as stated in auctions.

hi all- it is possible to underquote postage too, and therefore buyer gets a bargin:
i sold an item the other day, quoted £4.00 p&p 1st class recorded. when i got to the post office it actually cost me £5.19 to send the parcel
i had a bit of a dilemma whether to go for a cheaper option as buyer had obv only paid £4, but decided that it was my fault, not theirs, and so they should get service they have paid for... even if they didnt pay enough!
what did i learn from this? to invest in a pair of scales, and to put the post office website in my favourites!!! :rotfl:
I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

Theres also the paypal fees that sellers have to cover somehow.
All of the above too as well as time spent listing etc.

£3.50 for something that costs 64p is steep, but if it was listed as that then u agreed to pay it, and would be unfair (IMO), to then leave neg feedback.
Tho as said above u could mention infeedback that first class wasnt used, but email the seller first before leaving any neg feedback.
If i weere the seller i would refund you some of the postage. Its called good customer service!!
  • Just to add to the previous post, I actually left him positive feedback but mentioned the slow delivery and excessive p&p, not getting the service stated in his listing.

I had emailed him twice complaining about the delay as I hadn't expected to wait almost 2 weeks for item. He did reply to emails, apologising but making up a poor excuse.

Needless to say, he hasn't returned feedback!

This is the thing about ebay. Unlike for example amazon, amazon charge the same for each item so no seller can up the cost of postage compared to other people.

Where as ebayers can charge what they like, customise your ebay display so it states the postage cost, anything small don't go over £2.50. although no postage costs that much not even international rates.

    So watch out!

You are right in adding an extra charge.Have you allowed for your shoe wear.
Soles are expensive if they need replacing.Or maybe a new fashion pair.
Of course if you are lucky enough to take ten parcels to the post office at a time then it would work out less for you.
For some of those larger items consider https://www.parcels4delivery.com and avoid paying those high post office prices.Works great if you are sending an item where the standard post office parcel price is near £9+.(UK).There collections are from 12noon and you can track it with a great 24hr or 48hr service instead of the up to 5 days nonsense at the post office.
Watch out for the new prices at the post office coming soon.

I think seller was ok to charge this amount as you arnt paying for actual postage. As long as seller didnt hide postage there is no reason to complain. I have had items won from me at 1p and people still complain(leave me negative!..grr) about postage £3 do they think im running a charity?I say to people now in my listings to read description and postage well and if you are not happy with it please dont bid.As i total in my head item plus p & p & what total i want to pay before bidding on items ..off my soap box now.
