Quote for new boiler

Can anybody help me with this quote for a new boiler - not so much the cost (which I think is very good) but to ensure he is doing everything that needs to be done and not cutting corners?

Protect all surfaces in immediate area with dust sheets
Keep work area clear and remove all rubbish on completion
Install new Worcester 24ikw condensing boiler in kitchen (in place of existing boiler)
Upgrade gas supply to boiler including earth bonding
Reconnect hot and cold supplies and heating pipes (to be joined to existing pipework in kitchen)
Supply and fit wireless room stat (position to be agreed)
Flush system and protect with inhibitor
Run condense pipe to waste under kitchen sink and pressure blow off to outside

Materials - £1,000
Labour - £500

He also says new radiator valves should be fitted as the existing valves could leak when a new boiler is installed - add £125 if I want these.

Comments?

Thanks very much.

Good afternoon: Ideally, in addition, a Boiler Buddy or Magnaclean, scale inhibitor and a better boiler than the WB Junior 24i (low flow rate, limited features)...if you must have a WB go with the CDi range. Quote should include notification of the installation and receipt via CORGI of a Building Compliance certificate.

In all, a very cheap quote for the south...have you had any others?

I'm waiting for another quote (chased them up twice!) which should arrive tomorrow - I asked the other company to quote for both Vaillant and a WB.

Do you know anything about the warranty period? First company said Vaillant were offering five years at the moment and Worcester were likely to follow with the same in a few weeks but the person who gave me the above quote said both were a standard two years.

I thought TRV's were compulsory when fitting new boilers these days. Atleast that the impression I was given when I had a new boiler installed 2 years ago...

Yes, I already have them but he seems to think they might leak as they are about 11 years old.

Oh yes. I can't count the number of times I have seen old TRVs leaking - seriously, I can't.

Best to change the radiators as well, as they are at least as old.

I take it from that you think it's unlikely? :D

He never said anything at the time, it's just what he put on the estimate.

The other quote should be with me today so I can compare them.

Is it normal to ask for money for materials up front? I can understand why, as he is a small company, but how do I know he won't run off with it?

Good morning: The OH always takes 25% on the first day of the job but this doesn't cover the cost of materials for a boiler/CH install or a new bathroom...he is a one man band. He always provides a full specification, written quotation detailing terms and conditions and has the client sign two copies confirming acceptance and return one thus forming a contract. As the OH is a member of the CIPHE, a dissatisfied client can use the CIPHE's complaints procedure (hasn't happened in 30+ years as a member;)). You can reduce the chance of being taken for a ride if you use an RGI recommended to you by a source you trust.

Post your next quote so we can have a gander.

How did this turn into an advert for your OH?

OP - you want a quote not an estimate, you want a specification of works and terms and conditions, you should have been provided reference contact details and you should have seen the installers corgi card, it would be very wise to check that he holds public liability insurance.

If any of these are missing then get clarification as you see fit. Very few installers are rogue traders and tradesmen worry a great deal about rogue customers. I would take the view that a customer who would not or could not pay a deposit would be unlikely to pay the final invoice and unless I knew them would not accept the job.

Good morning: No links to his business anywhere on MSE...just promoting good practice in plumbing and heating.

I've looked at his website which has feedback from other customers, and pictures of work he's carried out. I've also checked his Corgi registration on their website. I haven't asked about his insurance yet but I will do if I decide to use him.
