St Austell - out of season

Were going to St Austell at the end of the month for a week, and im guessing a fair amount of things will be shut seeing as its out of season. Im hoping someone from the area could let me know whats on and around at this time of year, any recommendations etc.

Also do they have there own theatre?

Hoping to take the kids swimming a couple of times and was going to see lost gardens of Heligan but been advised there isnt alot to see at this time of year.

Any suggestions would be really appreciated, money saving suggestions even beet for example good lunch time venues for eating.

Kind regards

Jay
I hope that my child, looking back on today
Will remember a mother who had time to play;
Because children grow up while you're not looking,
There are years ahead for cleaning and cooking.
So, quiet now cobwebs, dust go to sleep.
I'm nursing my baby, and babies don't keep.

  • If Flambards is open, that is brilliant for kids. Try the local paper, the Cornish Guardian as they sometimes have money off vouchers. Will you have a car with you? The beaches should be nice and quiet, and great with a flask of hot chocolate. There are two great swimming pools in newquay, which is probably 20 miles away, one is Hendre and the other is by the zoo, both have slides if the kids like that kind of thing.
Agree, the tourist office is the best place to look, and sometimes their leaflets have money off vouchers.

Go to Charlestown, it's only a mile away, lots of ships to see. Charlestown is used a lot for film locations.

Rashleigh Arms should give a good pub lunch.

I've had the Locals' Passport in previous years (£3-5 for a year's unlimited visits) and I never really used it. I've never really been a fan of the Eden Project at all.

It's worth searching for a discount voucher.

Food is limited at Eden too, I've found there are a few places to eat, but usually either just closed or very very limited offerings - at tourist prices. Better to take your own picnic style lunch, or plan your day so that you eat elsewhere.

As has been said, there's no pool at St Austell. Here is a swimming pool list: http://www.destinationcornwall.co.uk/infile12.htm#Swimming

St Austell is now at the tail end of some massive redevelopment. The original cinema was closed down and demolished (along with a lot of the town).

Here's the news report when they laid the new foundations for the new one.

It was due to open in December 2008, so might need investigating further.

Cinemas in Cornwall aren't easy to find. They tend to be small/old fashioned places, not all will show every latest film.

Here is a list of Cornwall cinemas (there is a St Austell one listed there at the top). http://www.destination-cornwall.co.uk/cinema.htm

eden in my opnion is over-priced, it is ok if you are into plants, but basically thats all there is, depending on how young the children are, they could get bored very quickly, Dave

The local tourist information centres (TICs) in Cornwall are very helpful. See this site:

    http://www.visitcornwall.com/members/contacts/tics

There is a free leaflet for winter tourist places open in Cornwall (usually covers Nov - March). If you ring up any of the TICs and ask for one, I'm sure they'd post one.

(By the way, Tesco clubcard vouchers or Nectar points can be used to get into Eden cheaper, but it's not much fun for younger children).

There is a leisure centre with a pool in St Austell (I used to work there!). The cinema is open and is 'modern'. Use the local press for vouchers for some of the local attractions.
Eden do a number of free sessions at the weekend for various groups such as NHS employees etc. I think the last weekend in the month is free to sport club members. Be worth checkiong first though. The Ice Skating rink is also open and worth a go if you do visit eden.
