mossy wrote:Well I tried to haggle on the price of a dvd recorder at Curry's yesterday with no joy, the best price the mos could give me was the actual price and they wouldn't even try to match their online price. Going to try again today, don't wont to be online as neither they or comet have good reports. Both are charging the same price online and £30 more each instore. Think I'll try the comet is charging the same as you could you reduce the price so that I buy it from you type of line....
Well I went back to Currys this afternoon. Eventually managed to find a mos who could help me (making sure I didn't get the same one as yesterday lol). Politely mentioned that comet also had this instore for the same price..that I would rather buy it from them could he do anything with the price. Said he couldn't as it was the same as other store, asked if I needed any discs or scart. I said not really and he mentioned he could reduce them for me, I said okay £230 and a free pack of disks but he couldn't do them for free.
So I mentioned the online price and he said that he could match that, so he went to check the price online which was £199.99 and he did it for that price...so I saved £30 = 13% discount and got it there and then instead of having to wait 5 days for the delivery people to bash the dvd recorder about for me.
Well chuffed...just shows if you are polite and have the time to try again the next day just in case that you can get a discount. :jSaving for Disney again, oops why book one Disney holiday when you can book two!:starmod: Emergency Fund Savings - #148 - £10/£1000 1% :starmod::xmastree:#083 SPC6 £63 - SPC7 £90 - SPC8 £63 - SPC9 £54 - SPC10 £26 - SPC12 £70 :xmastree:0 -
I think the cheakiest way I've ever got major discount (and I'm no stranger to haggling) was in a high street sports shop - think it was Sports World - that had a closing down sale.
I can't now remember what the exact maths was, but it was something like 50% off all marked prices, with a further 20% on that day.
What they had meant to say was a further reduction off the adjusted price, but it was obvious that the girl behind the till had very little mental arithmetic skills, and so I was able to easily confuse her into marking down everything at 70% off list, and then I offered £40 cash on something like a £44 transaction which they took as well (by telling them it was saving them the card charge).
All in, I ended up paying £40 for about £200 of stuff that was all 'A' grade goods. But it does take a bit of nerve!!0 -
I was in MFI at the weekend, and they currently have no sale on but the sales assistants desks all have the old sales brochure price lists displayed.
Do you think they would still honour those prices if I was brave enough to ask, or do I wait for the next sale?Is it better to aim for the stars and hit a tree or aim for a tree and land in its branches :think:Loves being a Wonderbra friend :kisses3:

I would have thought so. MFI nearly always have a sale on don't they? You don't need to be brave to ask, you just need to be sensible (ie you would be mad not to ask)0

Also if I could talk people into buying a full matching outfit (it was all mother of the bride type stuff), then I would offer a discount if they bought the hat, or throw in a corsage. It is worth being cheeky - I used to give discount if I thought the buyer might return. In this respect catch them when it is quiet and they feel like they might not make their quota- mid week or a late night opening if they have them -
I got 20% of a jumper I bought in Bon March as it had a loose thread.0 -
Harveys Furniture store - managed to get almost 13% on a £2500 purchase.
Mind you it was late in the day and I think the SA needed to make up her figures.0 -
Nice bump, I missed this thread the first time around. Any other good haggling tips for 2007?_________0
