Great Best Places To Haggle Hunt

  • In John Lewis' there's an ex-display fridge freezer & an ex-display hob (expensive). The F/F is about £799 reduced to £699 and eventually down to £399. The hob is £699 then £499 now £399.
Now I know they've been on the floor for a good few weeks maybe even since xmas.

So my question is, what's the best haggling strategy.

I recall having a discussion with a S/A once about ex-display stock and how it's 100% profit for the store as the stock is written off as soon as it goes on display. But the guy said that was nonsense.

I've never really had any great luck with haggling and usually end up buying the stuff anyway.

I really want this gear, but want it cheaper still.

    Help.

    Ta.

They don't write it off when it goes on display- they write off the loss when they sell it at the reduced price- you may get a little more off, and you will get free del as they del everything free.
just ask for a little more off.
  • I received a discount off the 'half price' at Bensons Beds. I didn't buy immediately at the store - I wanted to continue looking round. A few days later I rang and spoke to the assistant (whose name I had made a note of) and asked what deal could she do for two beds and was offered 10%. I paid over the phone by credit card (0% interest of course.) A month later, just before delivery was due, the warehouse phoned to say that the beds were unavailable for another 2 weeks. So I rang the store again and (calmly) expressed my anger and disappointment; I said I was considering cancellation. As a sweetener I was offered a 10% refund for the inconvenience, so the final saving was almost 20% i.e. £76 off shop price.
  • My best ever piece of haggling was with a plasterer who I needed to plaster 2 small pieces of wall for me.

He came round to measure up and quoted us £150 on the spot, which I dismissed out of hand as being above my budget.

I then found out he used to work at a shop where my mate works now, so we got talking about mutual aquaintances, and he dropped his quote to £100 - i said that i'd think about it and phone him back later that day.

I phones and after a bit of chit chat I asked him how much the quote was again to which he replied "OK, OK, £80 but thats the lowest I can go" - i told him to come that weekend.

Come saturday he arrived, and i made him tea etc. on request and generally chatted about football and beer and joked around whilst waiting for the plaster to "go off". Time came to pay and I asked him again what was the bill, and he replied "£70 but dont tell anyone I did it this cheap".

So basically I haggled down from £150 to £70 without really trying - just by generally talking !!!!!!
  • I found Comet to be very easy to haggle in - I have done it several times usually by threatening to go to Dixons/Currys etc
These electrical stores are desperate to sell so I have found they will always do a dea
  • i always ask for money of when i buy more than one, in a clothes shop -
i smile sweetly and just say i would love to buy the two but is there any chance of a discount..... have been given 10% of in Levis, Warehouse and Dolcis. also got 10% of a coat in Espirit by asking if would be in the sale at any point, because i loved it so much but couldn't quite afford it. i have had turn downs to....
always be polite and friendly - much more likely to get a nice responce!
  • I worked for B & Q for 4 1/2 years. We had loads of people haggling. Depending on how people asked, we would often give a discount - especially if it was a high value item.

My advice is when you have found what you want to buy, ask to speak to a duty manager and haggle with them. It works especially well with kitchens and bathrooms. Also Saturday is the last day of B & Q's financial week so if the store is only a few grand away from their target they'll bend over backwards to get your cash.

It's not really worth haggling over low value items because they are mostly loss leaders so you'll just get an outright "NO".
  • Just after Christmas I wanted to buy a Widescreen TV (CRT not TFT) of which there are only a few left in stores as they are switching to flat panels types.
The one I wanted was on the Curry's site for £379 + £20 delivery.
I went to the store to see what they looked like.
They did not have one but the assistant said he could order one and have it delivered for the £379 price with free delivery.
OK not a massive saving I thought but I got him to include a CD/Radio/Cassette (£15) that my mate was going to buy in with the price.
So overall a nearly 10% saving, I was happy esp' as these tellys were over £700 a few months back.
If you are not fussed about High Definition TV (HDTV) and are putting the TV in the corner of the room go for an old stlye CRT one. They are now excellent value for money and the picture quality is far better (in my opinion) than the cheaper TFT screens at over twice the price.
Just get your mate to help lift them out of the box as they are really heavy.

Well I tried to haggle on the price of a dvd recorder at Curry's yesterday with no joy, the best price the mos could give me was the actual price and they wouldn't even try to match their online price. Going to try again today, don't wont to be online as neither they or comet have good reports. Both are charging the same price online and £30 more each instore. Think I'll try the comet is charging the same as you could you reduce the price so that I buy it from you type of line....

Also need some advice/opinions....I need to replace my two front tyres but on closer inspection looks like I really need to replace the back two as well (they've been on for quite a few years and are cracking a bit as well as being near the limit)...surely buying four tyres at once deserve a good discount. I was going to wait until around the 20th of the month (one because thats when DH gets paid) but also I thought it would be better to wait till later in the month when they are concerned about targets. I was going to try on a Friday but does anyone think mid week might be a better ploy?? I'm hoping for around a 20% discount what do you guys think?? :) Any advice?

Was talking with a friend the other day. Apparently Jessops are very reasonable when being asked for discounts. Was also told they match online prices...
