TV Pickle

Our new flat has a terrible reception through the antenna, despite buying an expensive stand-alone one we can only pick up a handful of freeview channels.

Therefore, we're thinking of signing up to a TV provider.

We already have 02 broadband and a bt phone line, and we're commited to that for another year. Therefore, it's pointless considering Virgin or BT TV as they require you to have various other products with them already to save money.

Best option for standalone TV is the basic Sky package, seemingly. £16.50 per month for the basic variety pack with the option of upgrading.

What I wanted to know is will I be able to watch all the freeview channels as well as the paid-for ones through the Sky receiver?

Put aside the idea that it might be a waste of money as I'll consider that later! Sky+ might be the best way to feel as though I'm getting value from joining them, and sports might be an option in the future despite the cost.

Cheers

Or having said that, maybe FreeSat would be a better option for getting a decent reception at a decent price?

You will get free channels on Sky, however they will differ to the one's on Freeview.

That might be your opinion of "best" but it's not the cheapest. If you want to save money, go for the "pay once" FreesatFromSky offer.

To save even more money, buy a second-hand Sky system from your local paper (or free via "Freecycle") and install it yourself.

If I'm only staying in a flat for 12 months, then doesn't a lot of money go on FreeSat installation which I may not benefit from for long? I.E I can't take the box with me and just plug it in at the next place, I'd have to pay for installation again, and again, until I was settled down properly, no?

I take it from what you have said there is no rooftop aerial into feeding into the property?

If you go for the freesatfromsky you can get the equipment and installation for less than £75

did you try a signal booster, you can buy them from most places (like Sainsburys!) cost about a tenner, we have one on both TVs as we used to have problems with poor digital reception and this fixed it, lot cheaper than sky even if you only give it a try ;)
  • we are in exactly the same position with our flat, useless tv reception through the roof aerial so have unfortunately got to fork out money for Sky as cable is not available in our area.

The deal I got earlier on today was all entertainment mixes for £21.50 with free installation and free Sky+ box, might be worth a try? And if you refer me as a customer you and I get £50 of M&S vouchers.

Pay Once Watch Forever does seem the best option, thanks for all your help though.

£75 for freeview through a Sky Dish....can't really go wrong as long as I cancel the subscription.

    (free would've been better obviously!)

You cannot get Freeview through a dish. (Just in case you think you would get the freeview channels this way)

Well, you know what I mean, Sky FreeSat, which is pretty much the same if not better.
