Guitar lessons - £17 per 1/2 hour????

My son (year 2, age 6) has just signed up for guitar lessons at school, which will be before school at 8am. Didn't ask the price beore agreeing to it, but turns out it is £17 per lesson!

Is this normal?

That sounds mighty expensive! How long are the lessons? We pay about £10 for 20 minutes, which is also expensive given the private piano teacher charges that for half-hour.

  • Blimey, £34 an hour seems very pricey indeed!! I'd expect Noel Gallagher to be giving the lessons for that!!!

Been a long time since I had guitar lessons, so maybe that is the going rate? If it is, then I'm in the wrong job!!!
An uneffected guitar sounds like a little girl crying. An uneffected bass sounds like an angry Rhino!
  • I believe the Musicians Union advised rates are about £30 per hour for private tuition so it's either about right or a little high. But often with children in schools tutors will take small groups (2-4) to keep the price down per student. You could ask if this is possible?

As the above poster says definitley look into group sessions. My sons cost £60 for 10 weeks (30 min lessons) and he is in a group with 2 other children, they all started at the same time so are at the same level

Look for a private tutor. Suggest you ring the nearest fee paying private school and ask who provides their lessons. Alternatively ask in a local music shop - they know who the good teachers are because the kids tell them!

The peripatetic music service from my LEA is IMHO pathetic.

ps currently pay £9 per half hour for my 3 for individual lessons. Grade 6,5 and 2 (flute, saxaphone and clarinet) teacher is wonderful.
  • DS has private guitar lessons at £10 per 30 mins.
Lessons through the school were a little cheaper (£8) but you had to pay for a full term up front (non-refundable if little darling gave up after a few weeks).
School lessons were also groups of 2-3 where now he has 1-1 tuition.

  • I pay about £9 for 20 mins for my son, so it sounds about right to me. However, my son is in year 10 and learning electric guitar- I would expect primary school lessons to be cheaper, though on reflection I don't know why I would think that! Young children often give up after a short time, so perhaps the tutor is figuring this into the cost somehow to make it worth his time.
