Help! "Default mail client not properly installed"

I've already done much of this. I'm pretty certain I'm missing a registry entry somewhere, as the pc also seems to be freezing when the dialogue box comes up sometimes and when I'm filling in forms, as well as the other problems  It's all been so sudden ... maybe AVG has destroyed something along the way with a virus in it?
I'll go through the thread link again.
In the meantime, can anyone advise how to get a registry entry back ... is there any free software (though thinking about it, I can't download anything ).Wins since 2009 = £17,600MANY THANKS TO ALL OPS0 -
No, you're in the wrong place, if you click Start .> Control Panel > Internet Options you should see a folder with seven tabs along the top, choose the Programs tab and make sure you're email client is listed there and click the Make Default button below the list0

OK, done this, but still not working. Should I reboot do you think?Wins since 2009 = £17,600MANY THANKS TO ALL OPS0

Won't do any harm, but to be honest not too confident that it'll make a difference0

Tried it and no differerence ... thanks anyway.
Anyone got any other ideas? Still convinced a registry entry has been deleted somewhere along the line ... just a pig I can't download anything!Wins since 2009 = £17,600MANY THANKS TO ALL OPS0 -
do you have your XP disk ?? If so, you could try doing a repair install ............Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple

I think I have it somewhere, but not sure I'm brave enough to install it again in case something goes wrong. Would I have to uninstall the old one first, or would I be prompted to override the original one?Wins since 2009 = £17,600MANY THANKS TO ALL OPS0

Just to let all you kind posters know that I've solved all the problems :j
Turned out it was the Comodo Firewall I installed a few weeks ago. I disabled it and tried to download a programme ... it worked. Then checked my email and all working correctly with no weird messages. Uninstalled it and now trying Zone Alarm firewall. I didn't associated the firewall with any of these problems as I downloaded it a while ago ... must have developed some conflict somewhere.
Many thanks to you all for your help
