Is it possible to have 2 isp's ?

Hi, I was just wondering if its possible to have 2 isp's ? Iam currently on the sky mid 8mb package but only getting speeds of less than 1mb. Is it possible to downgrade to the 2mb free package and then sign up to the O2 offer as they say my line is capable of 3.5mps.

you cannot have two broadband ISPs on the same line ... if you're out of contract migrate to O2 with a MAC

I have Virgin cable so I could get another ISP via the phone line if I wanted.

I assume Sky uses your telephone.

Actually it is a good question because *theoretically* there is non reson why you could not have 2, but I doubt the providers like he idea of competition.
Howeer practically I don't thinkn you can.
Anyway if you line can only do 3.5mps that is the maximum you could get even with
    2 ISPs.

You could have broadband and dial-up on the same line but its obviously a wate of money
    (usually).

if you are in cable area or have other landline that can support ADSL you could get routers that allow you to bond two internet connections to form one big connection. In fact some ISP for example http://www.keconnect.co.uk/products/business/broadband/bonded/ actually can set it up for you.

Theorically it would be nice, but practically no you can't have 2 ISP. reason being is BT line is and can only be controlled by 1 company (ISP) if you gone for the phone package too, BUT if you are going for broadband only without phone pacjkage chance are yes might be possible.

I see you state you are only getting speed of 1mb, do you know how far from the local phone exchange you are to your home? As distance does play alot in speed you can achieve as well as SNR (Signal Noise Ratio) does affect that max speed attainable.

Sky should have their own forum on which to help you with your speed and to able to get the tech to adjust your db profile as needed.

I do not have on hand the several website for you to check out on to help you with your spped, but once I get a chance will look it up and get back to you asap!

those are my stats iam 2.6km straight line and 3.6km by road from my exchange. When i do a speed test i only get 834kbs.

Downstream attenuation of 55dB could give around 3 - 4 mb all being well. Downstream connection rate of 1024 kbps suggests Sky have nobbled your speeds for stability whcih increases downstream snr margin OR fault somewhere has increased downstream margin thereby decreasing downstream connection rate.
The skyusers forum have reported Sky are tinkering about with DLM similar to BT on their Easynet LLU product so it may well be a result of that.

I see however this has all been covered already here - http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1403563 however its the connection rate from router you need to check when using the test socket.
If Sky are using DLM like BT then it may take days for speedtests to reflect any improvement but no-one seems to know for sure what's going on - http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/sky-broadband-help-support/
