beat me to it on the AVG remove and replace with Avira !! lol

Kataratarina , AVG 8 is a known slower down on PC's , Avira is much lighter on resources

when you have installed that then go to

    www.windowsupdate.com

and chose "express" and download all the updates you find , then reboot if needed. Then go back to the site again and check there are none outstanding . Then go back a 3rd time and this time click on "custom" and look for Hardware updaes and download those

You will need to phone Microsoft and say you formatted your computer they will ask for your xp license number and tell you how to make it valid. Don't install AVG!!!!! Visit here to get the phone number http://support.microsoft.com/gp/assistsupport
  • i think her disk was a copy though!

in which case you need to buy a proper copy

if you have a COA sticker on your laptop

    coa_page_pc-sysbldr_tc.jpg

then a simple phone call to them will suffice , regardless of the source of the XP CD they will validate your copy

All the disk are the same. Its the license number you need should be on the sticker somewhere on the laptop.
