Can I just have broadband?

I'm looking for a cheap broadband provider (I'm currently with AO-hell). I would be very happy not to have a phone as I don't make that many calls. If I could just have BB I would but I know I need a line to receive BB. So my question is who is the cheapest line provider and cheapest broadband provider? As I don't make many calls, I don't really care for the price of making calls, just the price of the line rental. I'd like unlimited BB but don't mind if the the limit is high.
Thank you!

you could always try mobile broadbad - then there's no line rental to pay, but don't expect much of a usage allowance

    - alternatvely ask about a bundle from AOL, TalkTalk, etc - though personally I'd avoid both of them, and please avoid Tiscali too! . . .

Broadband via a telephone line but without a telephone service is known in the business as 'NakedDSL' and isn't available in the UK although some countries have forced broadband providers to offer it.

You can get broadband on its own from Virgin Media, but their tariffs make the phone line almost a freebie.

I would also reccomend Virgin. We were in the same situation but also were having problems with our phone line.

So we disconnected from BT and now pay £15 a month for Virgin phone line and broadband. Our phone is for in coming calls, as we both get enough free minutes on our mobiles.

If you wanted to make cheap calls on the Virgin Media Phone Line you can use http://www.18185.co.uk/mobilerates.php via their 0808 Freephone Number.

If available in your area Virgin Media Cable Broadband Only 2MB is £10 for first 6 months,£17 a month thereafter, less £65 cashback from Cashbackkings.Which averages out at £8.08 a month over first year.

    After 12 months renegotiate price.

  • Thanks for the info about Virgin Media. I've found a deal for £4.50 a month (for the 1st 6 months. £9 pm after that) for Broadband when you take out Phoneline rental £11. Total £15.50 per month But I'm unsure about this in the small print:

General: Installation charges apply (starting from £30 for standard install and, subject to availability, from £15 for Quickstart self-install).

Why do I have to pay installation charges? I have all the things I need to be connected to the web, I just need them to connect me.

Argh! Just found out that I can't get that Broadband deal as you mentioned, in my area. Any other suggestions?

After the first 6 months the deal you quote would have cost you £9 + £11 = £20. The cheap initial price is to entice you to sign up!
You can get a similar deal as standard, eg BT line rental @ £10.50 (old prices before VAT reduction) for direct debit and paper free billing. You can then sign up with a number of ISP providers for £9.99 (old price again). Two that spring to mind are Plusnet and Newnet. So total would be £20.49.
