Milk coming out of onion??

Options
My DF just chopped open an onion to put in our dinner and it started leaking a white liquid which looked like milk! It's a new onion bought last week and it smells normal, but now he has thrown it away because he thought it might have something alive in it... what could this be?

I thought this was normal, its just the natural juice of the onion.

edit: Gorgeous baby by the way!

Don't do much cooking do you? Its just juice from the onion. It was probably quite fresh, that's why it was juicy. There was no need to throw it away. It was fine.

I think it's the juice but anyway I have always just gone ahead to cook with it and we have had no one dying yet!!:rotfl:
  • But it's always been clear before, that's why he was so worried, lol. I was going to use it anyway because it smelled fine. I've never seen an onion with white juice before!

    Thanks gemmaj :)

Its just the juice, I thought it was always milky?

when I make stuffing I do the breadcrumbs in the food processor and then the onions; means I dont waste any of that lovely liquid or the flavour and not much water needed to bind the mix. ;)
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

  • Certain varieties of onion, IIRC the sweeter ones, have a milky juice.

When I was growing up all our food came out of boxes, frozen. When I left home and started to learn to cook, the white 'milk' in an onion freaked me out, too! Like the OP, I also threw out onions due to the juice!

This thread has made me smile :D
  • Sorry, but I can't help laughing:rotfl: Yes, it is normal-just the onion juice;)
  • I wanted to thank you all on this post. If not for you lunch would not have happened. Im 20 and I do not cook very often. I cut the onion and I to thought somthing was wrong with it. I googled milk coming out of onion and found this. Thanks Again.
