Central Heating Servicing

Extremely basic question alert!!!

I moved into a new build just over a year ago and was repeatedly told how vital it was to get the Central Heating boiler serviced after a year.

Apparently I can just get an Corgi registered engineer to do it.

So, do I just pick a central heating engineer at random from the phone book?

Can anyone give me a rough idea of how much a service would cost?

I'm in Edinburgh by the way, if anyone can reccomend any particularly good engineers.

Ta muchly
Never mind ...

  • I would look on the web site of the Guild of Master Craftsmen https://www.findacraftsman.com where you will then be able to find a local plumber. I would recommend you look for a Corgi registered plumber, who are the only authorised people to work on a gas appliance.

Annual servicing is strongly recommended, as there are a lot of safety issues surrounding a boiler, and £80 or so is a small price to pay.

    Hope this helps.

My husband is a Corgi registered engineer and charges £45+vat for a boiler service. That takes around an hour. We are in the South East and in our area that is around the going rate.

A pity he's not in our area as we just got stung for £140 and now there's fumes all the time!

Can I just ask what are they actually supposed to do. When we got ours serviced for the first time, I was expecting him to check the boiler and bleed all the radiators etc. All he did in the end was get his hoover out, hoover the boiler and reset the pressure for me. He was there about 15 minutes and it cost me £80. I know it is important to have it done but from what I've seen them do, it pains me to pay out that much for a few minutes work and something that I can do myself.

What he should be looking for is incomplete combustion and the production of carbon monoxide, the flame will burn yellow not blue, when you have a fault

I had ours done last week and it cost £45+VAT in Milton Keynes - I chose the nearest engineer to me from Corgi's web site:

    http://www.corgi-gas-safety.com/section_gas_law/about_installer_find_installer.asp

I chose "Domestic Central Heating" as the category with my post code.

    Thanks

    Gavin

  • 5 minutes ago I rang up heateam to get a price for getting my baxi boiler serviced. £90

Then again it`s a small price to pay for expert attention. I also have the heateam extended warranty at £96 a year. Total £15.50 a month. I was thinking about BG homecare for the warranty but they only include a safety check. An ongoing expense that I just have to take into account for the peace of mind
