hey guys i have been interested in getting 3-4 chicken for a while now and started to build my own home for them well thats out of the window unless someone can advise me how do do this
so a few questions
1 is there anywhere i can get cheap but reliable living homes for them (midlands)
2 where to get the chickens from ( https://www.bhwt.org.uk i have emailed about a few from here)
3 are they ok to stay outside in the winter or do you need anything special?
4 i want a mix of bird as these are for eggs in priority but want to make it interesting for my kids to get involved?
5 do you feel guilty keeping chickens and eating chicken?? as since i started thinking about it i would probably give up eating chicken!
any replies will be thanked unless you suggest there better off in a pie!!!!

The above houses will be big enough for 4max but the run is rather small but if you will let them out to free range everyday then that wont be a problem.
If you do get ex batts i doubt if you will look at chicken meat in the same way. i only buy free range chicken and if i cant afford it i go without...hardly eat chicken at all these days
PS ive got 10 ex battery girls#440 sealed pot challenge0 -
yes 4 hens will be the max i will ever keep at one time i have filled out a application form i dont knw if they will be classed as freerange as they will be kept in a cage and allowed the garden on dry days(not raining) how high do chickens fly and would it hurt them if i clip there wingsyou cant change yesterdaybut you can make tomorrow better0

It all depends on the individual chicken...i would advise not to clip wings as a matter of corse but only do it if you have no option. The prob with clipping is that they cannot escape from predators eg dog/fox etc when they have clipped wings. You will have to ensure that your garden is secure to minimise the risk of them getting out or predators in. Why wont you let them out if the weather isnt dry?#440 sealed pot challenge0

as it will be my partner that will have to get them back in the coop as i work it would not be a problem apart from we have a little one on the way so when its here she will be preoccupied i also thought the chickens would not like it?? like i said its my first time and i want the best for them any advise from you or anyone else is all a big learning curve
i know that avacado will do nothing but harm for them so at least i know something lolyou cant change yesterdaybut you can make tomorrow better0 -
Thats true avocados are bad for them so is rhubarb and potato leaves.
once your girls have had a free range in your garden they will always want to and wont appreciate being shut in:rolleyes:
Many people have no choice but to lock them inside a run when they aren't at home for the risk of fox attacks...so many people have lost hens to the fox and its a lesson learnt.
Thebigger the run the happier they will be and the less probs with squabbles you'll have.
My girls free range all the time but they have trashed the garden but i dont care:D I dont expect eeryone to have the same view as me though lol.
It is easy to pen a section off around the hen house and run by buying pond netting and staking it into the ground with bamboo canes...thats what i have done to keep them off my driveway/frontgarden.
I will just get you some links for a some fabby websites that will help you with just about anything related to chickens
bear with me a moment......#440 sealed pot challenge0 -
