Hi
I'm so far off the OS Bandwagon......fell off a while and slowly trying to get there. My food bills have risen as well which makes me think it is time to take action!
Anyhoo. Friend gave me a couple of artichokes at the weekend. Never tried them, neer cooked them, dunno what to do with them I am telling myself tho I have to do something with them and not just throw them in for the chickens.:D
So what can I do with them? And do they go nice with anything in particular?0 -

I grow them at my allotment (once you grow them you will have them there for life)!
I tried them boiled once and they were horrid! We now roast them (like roasting parsnips) and they are lovely...my girls argue over them.
I do peel them first though.0 -
Ah ha I have finally found the name for the veg my granny used to serve at her dinner parties - I remember she had special plates for them and everything.
So they are called globe artichokes, I would love to try them - I don't believe I was ever allowed as a kid.
I assume you don't get the wind problem with these.
Any pointers on how to cook them
From memory (and I was 5/6 when I remember this) the leaves (?) were pulled off and dipped in some sort of sauce?????0 -
Globe artichokes are totally different to jerusalem artichokes... as different as peas and carrots, there's a thread here with some recipes.TOP MONEYSAVING TIP
Make your own Pot Noodles using a flower pot, sawdust and some old shoe laces. Pour in boiling water, stir then allow to stand for two minutes before taking one mouthful, and throwing away. Just like the real thing!0 -
I've had jerusalem artichokes in my veg box for the past three weeks and I'm not to sure what to do with them...so I've ended up with two weeks worth in my fridge.
I've roasted them and there's soup but I have loads of soup in my freezer (and not much space at the moment!)
Does anyone have anymore ideas? If not I'll have to take them home to my mum instead of an Easter Egg

I had a veg box for the first time the other week and like you was a bit bemused by them, I made soup and then just used them like any other root vegetable, they went in mash with potatoes, and a stew, yummy scrummy.0
