We moved out of our last house partly due to the noise from the inconsiderate *** next door. Polite asking and letters from the local housing authority (he was renting) had no effect.

Be aware that, if any formal action is taken, even getting letters sent, then this must be declared when selling your property and could make this process very difficult.

We moved into a detached house and I'm never going back to anything but tbh.

Some of the replies in this thread reinforce my opinion that playing popular music continuously and at high volumes rots the brain.
  • Clearly, it's modern living that has made noise to be more of an issue between neighbours. People converting houses into flats rarely make provision for adequate sound-proofing, done to look good as cheaply as possible, they get rid of thick carpets and replace them with noisy laminate flooring, the curtains are replaced by blinds. All the things which used to absorb noise (when sound systems weren't even as powerful) are gone.

I've come to the conclusion that to have a quiet life as possible, try not to live beneath someone!

Also, laminate flooring in anything but a ground floor property should be banned unless there is PROPER sound-proofing installed underneath it.

I have a neighbour upstairs who's occasional loud music I can put up with but it's the stomping around that really gets to me. I've spoken to him about his noise face-to-face on 3 occasions and sent a couple of texts. Lately, I sent an extremely polite and well-thought out email to him which he completely resented. Sometimes the face-to-face approach works (and it should always be tried first) but in my experience, it doesnt matter how politely and nicely you put it, people hate being told to keep it down. You just have to be firm and not care about whether your neighbour likes you or not. We all have a right to peace and quiet within reason.

I'm moving out in a couple of months (not just because of him) and Im looking for a top floor flat! ;)
