Newbie Needs Help - Car being repossessed

Can anyone help. Last night a bailiff turned up and asked for the keys to my car. I refused because we have payed over two thirds of its value and we had been making regular but reduced payments to GE money. I phoned National Debtline in tears and they said that as the loan was for more than £25000 I was not covered by Consumer Credit Support Act. We cannot speak to anyone from GE until monday morning but the Recovery truck may still come over the weekend.
My OH has been self-employed for about 10 years, he only had about 3 months of paid work in 2008 hence the crisis. The car loan is one of many worrying debts we are struggling with. I am calling National Debtline again this morning to discuss everything.
Feeling very scared and helpless right now. We live in the country and the nearest shop and the children's school is 40 minutes walk away.

Sometimes it's hard to walk in a single woman's shoes - that's why we need really special ones!Total debt @ Oct 2008: £29,226.42 Credit Card- £[STRIKE]7493.56[/STRIKE] - £7243.56Weightloss : 0/34lbs0 -
First of all you move the car - park it somewhere well away from your property where they can find it just by "driving past"!
Second call Herbie21 - she runs http://www.bailiffadviceonline.co.uk/
And the number is 0906 550 0145 and is available between 8.30 and 7pm.
She will be able to advise you on what the bailiff can and can't do and what you need to do next.

Unfortunately they have clamped my car so I can't move it anywhere. I will definitely ring the number you suggested. We have spoken to the collection people and they are holding off until I speak to GE Money on Monday morning.
Had a good chat to National Debtline guy, he was really helpful and reassuring about my other debts but unable to offer anything on the car situation. We have paid over £20000 towards this and looks like we might lose the lot - we stupidly entered into the HP agreement without realising we were unprotected.0 -
I don't think the PPI (payment protection insurance) would have made a big difference to be honest.
...Linda xxIt's easy to give in to that negative voice that chants "cant do it" BUT we lift each other up.
We dont count all the runners ahead of us & feel intimidated.
Instead we look back proudly at our journey, our personal struggle & determination & remember that there are those that never even attempt to reach the starting line.0 -

Was it actually a bailiff? This doesn't sound like a typical way a bailiff would work. Is there a court order against this debt? Have they left you documentation?
Could they just be a debt collector?
I know most people use the terms interchangeably, but the difference is absolutely fundamental to what their and your rights are.If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything0 -
Just remove the clamp, if you cut the padlock only, chances are you may have to buy them another. Use a hacksaw and get a couple of friends to help.
Another way to do it is let the tyre right down and drive the car out of the clamp.
Good luck!0 -
Do not remove the clamp! You'll get done for criminal damage...
Block the car in and then cannot take it in the middle of the night.
Get the bus or cycle to the shops...0 -
