MOT Advisory Items
Good morning
Just a little bit of advice if possible
I had my car MOT'd at National Tyre (I know, I know!) and to cut a long story short it has passed. However, there are a number of advisory items on the certificate. These are (from memory, as I left the certificate at work):-
Obviously brakes are safety-critical and I will get these checked out, and while I'm at it I'll get the (non-fast-fit) garage to look at the other stuff too. My question is, in terms of (1) and (2), how urgent are they, and what are the consequences of not getting them looked at? And in terms of getting the work done, what's the cost likely to be? I have an, ahem, 1997 Vauxhall Corsa, so not worth very much at all.
Thanks in anticipation of your help

- Track Rod End (N/S I think) end cap missing - this was described as non-urgent but that salt could get into it and knacker the track rod end
- Rear wheel bearings need "taking-up"
- Front brake pads "may" need replacent

im surpirzed they didnt fail it for a cap off the track rod end.
if the cap is missing,i would get it replaced,if it had to pop you would have trouble steering.
the wheel bearings needing taken up? maybe they are worn and need replaced,i dont know how they could come to this kind of decission without actually "taking them up".
front wheels off for a good look at all pads, inside and outside pads, easy to tell if they are worn or not....work permit granted!0 -
Are there any cars left out there that you can "take up" the wheel bearings on. The last time I did that must have been about 20 years ago

1) If it's a plastic cover over the nut, it's not a requirement and nearly all cars don't have them. If it was the rubber boot, it should have failed.
2) Should have been an MOT fail.
3) Get them checked. Anything under 3mm and you need to get them changed soon.Conor

They were the exact words of the guy there, "the rear wheel bearings are a bit loose, not enough to fail the test but probably just want taking up a bit"#145 Save £12k in 2016 Challenge: £12,062.62/£12,000.00 Beginning Balance: £5,027.78 CHALLENGE MET

Some FWD cars still use taper bearings if they have drum brakes at the rear so you might be able to get away with nipping them up, however it still doesn't detract from the fact that there's at least one, possibly two items it should have failed the MOT on.Conor
