Think you've got too much running on it....
I've just done a clean install on an Athlon XP1900+, with 512MB RAM...and it runs much quicker now, but it's still slow compared to my main desktop and laptop...it will be, it's an older and slower processor. best way to keep it as quick as poss is to have as little as humanly possible installed and running..
Also, have you updated ALL your drivers ???......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple

Assuming you have everything backed up, I would just do a clean install.
You'll be finished doing that sooner than you'll be finished posting hijack this logs.0 -

I use all of those........
Reflect is the backup program
roboform holds all my passwords
mailwasher is the spam filter
tclock just shows the day/date/time
All of them installed a long time ago when it used to run fine.
I'll put Avira on next.
It's still running like a dog. e.g. click on a link in an email and it takes about 20 seconds to open a new browser window.0 -

Yes reformat and reinstall the OS, I have XP SP3 running on an XP1700+ with 512MB Ram and it runs sweet. The only way of finding the limits of the possible is by going beyond them into the impossible.

have you checked the virtual memory is set to be controlled by the system? look in the advanced tab of the system icon in the control panel
choose performance option for the in the advanced tab of the system icon in the control panel.
have you ran a disk cleanup - right click the hard drive icon, choose properties and select tools?
check how much hard drive space is being taken up by the recycle bin and reduce it to 1%
check how much space system restore is taking up - reduce to no more than 3% or switch off
how much free space does the hard drive have - less than 10% free will make the system sluggish0 -
I think if there is plenty space left, the hard drive is getting old and may need to be changed out. Just a thought.0

Did you put the 256mb ram in the secondry slot?
What is the MHz on the old ram & also the new ram?
Does the system now tell you that you have 1GB of ram installed? You can't be lost if you don't know where you're going.0
