Added RAM but PC still runs like a dog

I think I have exhausted all avenues trying to speed up my old PC.

virus scan
malware scan
ccleaner run
defrag
error check hard drive
system file checker run
added 256mb RAM. Total now 1GB
cleaned out old data
removed any unwanted startup programs
checked hijackthis log
etc. etc.

So what is left? Reformat and clean install ?

I should add that 1GB is the max RAM my motherboard supports

    Maybe a lighter anti-virus like Avira http://www.filehippo.com/download_antivir/
Try startuplite download this http://www.malwarebytes.org/startuplite.php open it and press continue it will automatically remove unnecessary things from startup.

    Thought about a reformat?

I always find the best way to get a PC back up to full speed is just to start again...

A reformat and re-install is usually the best way to sort it. Should keep it going awhile with the extra RAM. I would be good to start thinking about replacement as upgrading will mean replacing nearly everything.

I have already run the startuplite prog. I'm running the Comodo Internet Security package at the moment. Seems reasonably light on resources but I'm going to take all antivirus / malware / firewall etc. programs off the PC for a while just to see how it runs without them, disconnected from the internet of course!

I'll post a hijack log after that.

But one would have thought that it should be possible to find out what is causing the bottleneck without having to resort to a clean build
