I would really br greatful of an honest review of the following system...
Dell Inspiron 6000, Pentium M 1.7GHz, 512MB RAM, 15.4" WXGA, Windows XP Media Center - £588 - N01605 (e-value code, direct from Dell)
Is it a good price or is it worth holding out?
Oh, requirements are wireless internet surfing, usual software (ie, itunes, word, excell, excell etc) & I want the system to last in terms of build and general spec for a few years!
Thanks for the input.

Windows XP Media Centres are a hit, i think u have a winner. However i've seen a couple cheaper offers than that. I don't think you can go wrong.

its a decent system (i have one!)
however note the 6000 doesn't have an inbuilt mic or infrared."An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind" - Mahatma Gandhi0 -
Dell laptops are generally good and one of the best things is the availability of spares and accessories such as batteries. I just got a brand new one for my Inspiron 8100 for £65.
One downside though is that if you have a problem you will have to deal with their infamous call centre. Despite being in India it's staffed with 'cowboys' rather than Indians!Light blue touchpaper and stand well back !0 -
Thanks for the help guys. In terms of price is it a good deal or is it worth waiting for another to crop up as they often do with dell?!?!0

I paid £609 for pretty much the same spec'd machine about 6 months ago. However mine came with the ATI X300 64MB graphics card and a free laser printer.
However mine didn't come with XP Media Cetre (had XP Home SP2).

I have the model that turned into the 6000, aka the 510m, and for the couple of years ive had it, i have had no problems, i only took out the one year warranty as well, not had to do a thing to it. The only advice i would give is to deffinatly add the backup cd rom to the price its about £5.88, there was no option with mine and when i want to install new features or software that came supplied i have to reformat the whole computer and loose all the work.0

bought 6000 just before xmas - similar spec but 1.6 chip and WSXGA screen and dvd rewriter with 1 year collect and return warranty - paid £500 incl and am still waiting for 5% cashback via quidco which will bring it down to £460 or thereabouts - have to say i have found it excellent to use (am typing this on it whilst connected wirelessly to web) and it seems very well built - i can only recommend it - highet0

Highet,
How fast is your connection to the net? I have a 1MB NTL connection and I understand I would need a cable router. What kind of cinnection speeds could I expect? Thanks0 -

I think i can answer that for you,
With NTL you would need a wireless router (not ADSL router), connect that up, even with the slowest version 11mbps its 10 meg faster than your broadband connection, or you could get 54mbps which would be a lot faster than your broadband, you wouldnt get faster broadband just no loss of speed.0
