PCN received. My reg, but not my car?!

Does anyone know what I need to do to cover myself in the following scenario:

I received a PCN, which is in my Registration number ( I have a gold Renault Grand Scenic), but the picture shows a completly different make of car (Burgundy Range Rover!). The offence occured in Bethnal Green, which I have never visited.

I have sent an email to challenge the notice to the email given.

My big dilemma is how has this happened?! My plates have not been stolen, and it is a motability registered.

Do I need to register this with the police?
Do I need to do anything further?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Does the photo show the registration number? If not it could be just an error in transcribing the reg number.

I thought for cloned cars to work were the same make and colour as the original?

Personally at this stage I wouldn't get too excited unless they come back to you.

I thimk you should tell the police right away, maybe also let the DVLA know and your insurance company, in case the other car was ever involved in a crash.

  • Thank you both for the quick responses.

I can vaguely see the registration in the photo and it does look like my Reg.

Well in that case I would probaly check with DVLA what the form is.
    See quote I found:-

DVLA has a vehicle-checking service that can check a vehicle’s date of registration, engine capacity and colour and year of manufacture.

Yeh, I agree. I would take the photo down to the police station and I'm sure they'll advise you the best course of action.

  • Thank you very much for this.

Following the link above, I found this page very helpful - http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/VehicleCrime/DG_10020050

I will follow the advice of writing to the DVLA and contacting the local police.

  • Local police are not interested in this. They have just recommended that I contact the DVLA which I will do.

Type in the details of Range Rover and number plate and see what it says, then the correct details eg your car. Will be interesting if that picks it up correctly.
  • Did the check, and it does indeed show up as my vehicle.

I think I will stop panicking now and wait to see what the response from Tower Hamlets is!

Oh NO,NO, NO. You can't trust a Council to sort it or see such an obvious DVLA mistake.
You may well have a cast iron case but don't give the muppets the opportunity to balls it up and make it worse - cause you more problems.

Postal PCN yes? TH have a legal flaw as well.
What is timescale? - don't trust them not consider properly - they can take you out of time and cause a further argument!

write to DVLA - ??? yeah by all means but if that had happened to me I would have not been off the phone to DVLA until resolved!!!!

Police response appalling - failed to investigate a legitimate complaint and possible crime. Speak to them again and insist!
