usb ports-not working

when i insert lead plug into ports , does not come up on my screen as new hardware detected
eg. mouse or mp3 player lead
any suggestions on what the problem might be.
therefore i can only use the mouse with a round connection at back of computer.
but i do need usb port for mp3 player and mobile phone connections
any advice appreciated

Have you tried the other usb ports? Have you plugged the MP3 in with the lead or just the lead?

have a look in control panel > system > hardware > device manager, might give you an

idea.

i have tried both usb ports and also lead with and without mp3 player
i have gone into device manager which shows both ports are working properly
i have uninstalled and re installed usb ports following instructions in help and support.
still no luck!

Have you previously used USB connections on that PC?

If you have, have you updated anything? Windows update, software update?

If not, could be your BIOS needs changing to allow your motherboard to utilise the USB settings aand thus allowing your OS to use them..

Or like me your motherboard could be on the way out.

My ones used to show as "working correctly". they would not detect anything when plugged in . On the odd occassion I could get them to detect something they would spend 15 minutes trying to work out what it was before coming up as "Uknown device"

We have a fujitsu-siemens Scaleo and all 6 usb ports just stopped working! I spent ages trawling the internet looking for solutions, we tried fitting new usb ports etc.

In the end we removed the internal battery, powered up the PC about five times and it suddenly cleared the problem. Even the ethernet port that had stopped working some months ago sprang into life!

Have you tried a system restore at the time it last worked?

Might be best doing a full scan with MALWAREBYTES just in case, as that behaviour isnt normal!

Sorry my post was not clear but this all happened several months ago, all scans have been clean.
