I usually try to call people during the evening and at weekends however I moved house at the end of August 2005 so a lot of day time calls were made in the months that followed. Also other half lives in York and I tend to use his mobile to call him.
The rest of my family also live long distance. Another common type of call is to the other students on my course particularly when assignments are due - these can be daytime or very early morning calls!!
Is there anything else I can do as £70.00 per month is definately too high for my budget?

1) Don't phone mobile numbers
2) Change your broadband provider
3) Don't use the phone between 8am and 6pm
4) Wait for your family and other half to phone you
5) Phone people (on mobile or landline), let the phone ring once/twice, then hang up. Invariably they will phone you back at some stage shortly afterwards. This only works if you haven't blocked your phone number from being sent. (This sounds like a Viz type suggestion!!)British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -

If you are referring to avoiding daytime rates, that would be between 6am and 6pm. With BT Together Option 1 you will be paying 0.5p more for short calls (lasting no more than 1m40s) during the evening and weekend than in the daytime. Hence, 'peak' and 'off-peak' don't exist anymore.iainkirk wrote:3) Don't use the phone between 8am and 6pm
If you use 1899 you will pay less than you do now for all 01 and 02 calls at all times. You will also pay exactly the same amount irrespective of when you make the call.0 -
Hi all
Thanks for all of your help - plenty to think about!
I have seen in other posts about the 1899 number - can someone please tell me how you sign up - do they bill you separately, so presumeably I would need to still pay the BT line rental.
Also I believe that I need to ask BT for some sort of code in order to move provider - is that right?
I have a Study day tomorrow so I think I will try and sort this out then.

Go to the website I gave you a link for earlier and click sign up. You are billed separately by them and you continue to pay BT for your line rental.
Remember also about Primus Saver to get all weekend & evening calls to 01/02 numbers completely free. So use 1899 for daytime and Primus for the rest. Also I believe that I need to ask BT for some sort of code in order to move provider - is that right?
Are you talking about phone or broadband? You don't need any code for phone but you would only be putting your calls through another provider anyway. Your line rental stays with BT. If you're talking about BB I can't help you there as I have cable BB.0 -
If you are going to change BB providers (are you sure just downgrading to BT's BB basic at £17.99/month wouldn't be sufficient?) you will use a process called 'migration'. For that, you will need to contact your existing service provider and ask for a MAC (Migration Authorisation Code) number.methekidsandthecat wrote:Also I believe that I need to ask BT for some sort of code in order to move provider - is that right?Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
To use 1899 you don't 'move provider'. You simply dial 1899 and then the telephone number including STD code. It might be worth programming it in to your phone(s) if it allows.methekidsandthecat wrote:Also I believe that I need to ask BT for some sort of code in order to move provider - is that right?
Remember, this is only for 01/02 numbers, for 0845 numbers I think BT is the cheapest at all times. For 0870, use 18185 during the daytime (Mon-Fri 6am-6pm) and BT at all other times.
Have a look at Say no to 0870! for geographical (01/02) alternatives to rip-off 0845 and 0870 numbers.

BT are the cheapest E&W to 0845.
The cheapest supplier peak is https://www.dialaround.co.uk 2p a minute via 0844 access number.( A min call charge of 5p applies on this access number,so even if you dont get through you still pay 5p.) BT will charge 3p a min for peak rate 0845 calls.PF.0 -
I stand corrected. As far as the minimum charge goes, most call centres like to answer their 0845/0870 numbers pretty much straight away, so I don't think that would be an issue.pricefighter wrote:BT are the cheapest E&W to 0845.
