Just in case you fancy something different, we had 100 welsh cakes, piled on top of each other in roughly 3 tiers with a big cake topper on top. it cost us £30 for the cakes and I could have made the topper for about a £5 but bought it for £15.
Maybe you could borrow a nice cake stand and get some miniture choc cupcakes, with a bit of floral, or jewels on the stand it could look pretty nice.
Or my version but with iced brownies if you want white, sorry im going on.

I was going to suggest this, Costco do huge cakes for £10 and you could get two and cut it into it into progressively smaller pieces, coat it with butter cream and ice it with roll out icing, stack it and then pipe (or have a friend etc stack it and finish it for you) Another idea might be to find out if your local college could make it for you, I studied cake dec in college and the college I attended would make cakes made to order and it was much cheaper than the shops.
Costco cakes are yummy!!!! Good luck on finding something in your budget!!!:A :

both tesco and asda sell iced fruit cakes (like wedding cake) in 3 different sizes. tesco also do a large chocolate cake currently on offer at 3.99. take a look in the various supermarkets and you may be able to find a cake for under a tenner. married to the man of my dreams! 9-08-09

If you go to a place that hires cake tins, they will be happy to advise you.
I hired a cake tin from my local cook shop and they gave me a list of quanities of the ingredients needed for the different sizes, along with the cooking times and temperature.
If you are making a large cake that is a sponge rather than fruit cake be careful you cook it allo the way through.
I had only done smaller cakes ( normal size ones) and when I did a big sponge for a christening it wasnt cooked all the way through !!
I would say you could find a recipe that freezes well, make the sponge in advance. freeze it then ice/decorate it a day or two before... probably two days before you'll be too busy the day before I imagine.
Good luck0 -

Hello....if you want really cheap you could make a tower of profiteroles. We have this for birthdays,
we make loads of choux pastry balls, layer a plate cover, in the choc sauce/icing and keep layering till you reach a point,
i don't put cream in mine if anyone wants it we have some pouring or whipping cream on stand by, it gets demolished !!!!
On a fancy plate and done by someone who knows what they are doing it could be a very cheap option xx
Best wishes and good luck xxx0
