The screws pictured are called 'system zero'. Some game consoles use them so if you search for a 4.5mm gamebit you should find a suitable tool to remove them.

Ah, system zero. Thanks for that bit of info! You should add that to the link I posted earlier (no need to sign up to the site) as people will find it very useful.
I used one of these connectors - http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_160811_langId_-1_categoryId_165562
Cut the manky end of the wire off, but leave the original crimped connector attached to the prong. Undo the screws holding the clamp on the mains cable and pull it through a bit to give you enough wire to re-attach to the prong. Cut and strip the wire so it's just the right length, then crimp the connector onto the end. With a bit of bending and squeezing, it should fit tightly over the original connector.0
