DELETING KERIO AND INSTALLING ANOTHER FIREWALL

HOW DO I GET RID OF KERIO AND INSTALL ANOTHER FIREWALL

I posted the following on another Firewall Board but received NIL replies, so if anyone knows the answer I would be grateful.

Can anyone help me to get rid of Kerio ? I have tried without success to update Kerio (Fran says always check for updates) and each time it tells me that my InstallShield is out of date, When I try to download an up to date InstallShield from Microsoft, I am told "access is denied". So I decided I would dump Kerio and go to ZoneAlarm, but I cannot delete the Kerio. When I go into Add/Remove Programs and click on Kerio, I just get the same message that my Install Shield is out of date. I have been going round in circles with this and as I am not a "techie", I need help.

??? ??? ???

    Thanks for replying.
I am using Windows Me. Is this what you mean by a genuine product key, I am not familiar with that term and obviously am no computer buff !!!

  • If you still have the original install file for Kerio, try running it again, it may give you the option to uninstall the product. Or download the most recent version, install it and then try to uninstall it, which should remove all traces.

You can update your InstallShield engine here:

Just a thought - have you tried contacting Kerio?

If their support desk doesn't (offer useful support) good reason to dump them (NOT that it makes it any easier to do that..... ) If they do offer useful support, as a newbie, I'd stick with 'em.

    Sorry - I'm a driver, not a mechanic.

Good advice from Malestrom, I don't know how many times I've had to re-install a programme over itself so that I could delete it. Surprising how often it does work. Another thing I do is not to be shy about rebooting the system, try something and if it doesn't delete then always reboot. This too has worked on many occasions for me.

I replied to your other thread as well.

Try deleting it from the Registry but backup the registry before you do.

  • hi loft, just replied on the other thread - sorry, see you've already had that advice.

Guess it may be worth trying the registry thing, but guess you'll be needing some help on how to do that (and the backup bit?). 'Fraid that's beyond me - hang on in there - help will come!

    Thanks to Taxi97w - backflip - Noobie & Malestrom

Thanks all for suggestions.     I have e-mailed Kerio twice but no reply.    I admit to ignoring the advice about the Registry as I am no computer buff and haven't a clue what that is !!!  So what  & where and how ??   Sorry to be a nerd but this is why I am seeking help.  What sort of backup do I need for this i.e. how much.
I will try and download Kerio again from their website and see if this helps but am pretty sure that I will run into the InstallShield Engine problem again !!
    Will let you know.

  • If you're trying to stop Kerio from running in the first place, and don't mind having a few of its bits and pieces left lying around your computer taking up space, then what I would advise you to do is download Hijack This from http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/. Run this program, click on Scan, then click on Save Log. This will make a little text file, which you can then copy and paste into a message on this thread, or send me a private message if you like. This will enable us to find the Kerio program and tell you how to stop it running.

This solution will stop Kerio running when you turn your computer on, so you should be able to install another firewall (I recommend Sygate Personal Firewall). Like I said, there will be a few files and things lying around, but I don't think they should do any harm.

  • If you want to know how to remove it from the registry...

Disclaimer! If you mess up your system, I shall not be held responsible!

I don't know the specifics of this program, and I'm not about to install it just to find out, after your experiences, but try this.
Go to Start menu, Run. Type regedit and hit enter.
Go to the File menu, Export.
Type in backup in the filename box, and save it somewhere safe. This is a backup of your registry if things go wrong.

This is where it gets complicated.
Click on the + beside HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then on the + beside Software. See if you can find the name of the company who make Kerio in the list that appears. Expand that entry, and look around to see if there are any other bits of software made by the same company which you do not want to install. Assuming there aren't, right-click on the entry with the company name on it and select Delete. That should remove most of the settings that Windows uses when it runs Kerio. On other thing to do is go to the Edit menu, and select Find. Type in kerio in the box and hit enter. Then delete all the entries that appear with 'Kerio' in them.

One very final thing to do, which will be a lot easier if you follow my advice in the previous reply and give us your Hijackthis log. You need to find the entry in the Registry which loads Kerio when you start your computer. These are kept in the following location...
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, Software, Microsoft, Windows, CurrentVersion, Run. There should be a list of things here that start with Windows. If you can spot the Kerio one, delete it.

All that remains is to delete the Kerio files. Go to the Program Files directory, and find the directory called Kerio or named after the company that makes it. Delete this.

    Hope this works for you.
