We had a cake from M&S. This was 3 1/2 years ago but I noticed recently that they still do the same cakes. We had 3 tiers to serve to 80 guests. They also sell the stands for a few pounds. If I remember rightly I think it says on the packaging how many the cakes serves so it may be worth having a look when you're next in M&S. The decoration is minimal so we had OH's brother, who works in the kitchens of a posh hotel, pinch another couples sugar flowers of their wedding cake and put them on our cake . Don't worry, the decorations were heading for the bin so we just did our recycling bit

My friend got married recently and had a three tier chocolate cake, But instead of everyone having a bit at the end of the day or taking a bit home with them it was served with cream for desert. It went down really well and who doesn't like Chocolate cake!0

i cant remember the name of the company off hand (I think they are american) but you can send off a photo of you and your intended and they make 6" icing/marzipan figurines of you for the cake, or just general decoration.
they have photos on their site, and the attention to detail is hilariously funny. its the type of thing you could imagine going down a stormknow thyselfNid wy'n gofyn bywyd moethus...0 -
Sarahsaver wrote:I cannot believe the extortionate price of wedding cakes! It's the same cost to have a chocolate fountain - including the staff!!! about £350. What a rip off. Been to a wedding fair today, in the venue for our acrtual reception, and the room was all set out, nearly cried  it looked so lovely, but I am determined NOT to pay that much for a cake. Anyone here made their own?
Hi
It sounds odd but have you tried looking on ebay? I can't tell you how it tastes yet but I've ordered a two tier fruit cake of 10" and 8" which is simply iced and looks lovely for the bargain price of £80! I live locally so will be collecting the cake. There are several people advertising and they look lovely!
Might be worth a look?

If you want fruit cake then you have the option of buying from M&S etc, or making your own. The good thing about fruit cake is that it can be made months in advance so you won't be faffing about the week before your wedding when your attention will be needed elsewhere. For that reason I would advise against the fairy cakes, as they will need to be baked and iced relatively near to the wedding.
But even if you do decide to order from a local bakery, don't worry, the prices you will have seen at the wedding fayre aren't necessarily indicative of the whole market. The guys at the fayre need to recoup the (likely) extortionate price of a stand at the fayre and so won't represent the best value for money.Debt Oct 2005: £32,692.94
