Don't mess with the BIOS - just wanted to know who manufactured it so that we could tell if anything was wrong by the amount of beeps you get.

If you get the right type of ram, and don't blow it up with static electricity by walking on the carpet with it in your hand, you are very unlikely to have any problems.. Worry about it, if it happens.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

The important thing when upgrading memory, if you don't have a wrist earthing strap, is to earth yourself to the metal case before pulling out the power cord from the back of the PC. Then touch the case occasionally and don't move your feet around.

Fortunately modern memory is much less sensitive to static electricity than it was 20 years ago!

I don't know where I'd be without moneysavingexperts ... Had to swap memory boards on a couple of computers at work, was going to get my son in to do it, was worried about the static thing, but one of my colleagues egged me on and with the help of the tips here we decided to go for it - RESULT! So particular thanks to John Gray for reassuring me that the static's less of problem than it used to be, which explains why my DH was so gloomy about the chances of even DS being able to do it successfully!
