I'm thinking of upgrading the ram, i have never looked inside before. Have a good idea of what to do having read up on installing new memory on the crucial web site and reading books. Know what type i need, how much i can install, and that i have 2 spare slots to put it in. But what if something goes wrong (it usually does with me) will the pc just not reconise the new memory and i will just need to remove it and all will be well, or can something worse happen, in which case i might leave it to the experts. Thanks in advance.

Easiest way to identify if something goes wrong is by the beeping noises you get when you turn the PC on - generally 1 beep means everything is OK, anything else means there is generally an error of somesort.
Now don't worry cause you can't really screw up with a memory install, providing you follow the instructions clearly.
If you can tell me what type of PC you have and/or who the BIOS operators are then I can post here what the beeping noises mean (it varies). To find out the BIOS makers, just switch the PC on and it should tell you in the top or bottom left corners, ig not, hit F2 to go into the BIOS and it will tell you there.Treat others as you would like to be treated :A0 -
Take a look at Crucial they have a great guide somewher on their site (with photos) on how to install ram: http://www.crucial.com/uk0

There's a DIMM memory guide http://www.crucial.com/uk/install/dimm.asp installation and a SIMM (older desktops) memory guide installation http://www.crucial.com/uk/install/simm.asp. Their system scanner will also let you know the best chip to buy, how many free slots you have, how much ram you currently have installed and how much can be supported.0
