Hexus have a similar thread to this but on pc components. The problem is, the market moves so fast that it requires constant updating and so is continually out of date! It is better for people to ask individually as things change every week.
Anyway.. my dad tried to get me into programming on an old amstras but being 8 or so at the time (maybe I was older, it seems a while back though) I wasnt too keen
Notihng can ever beat the thrills of the Amiga 500+ though, what a beast. matched betting: £879.63

Well if you are going back in time, I started with a Vic 20, yes programs on Cassettes, but mainly typed in from magazines, which usually had a printing error which you either learnt to do Basic to fix or wait for the correction the following week/month! Moving on to the Commodore 64/128 (still in the loft) and then the Amiga (also still in the loft) before I gave in and got a PC.
Sorry guys showing my age.

Why is it I have less time now I am retired then when I worked?0 -
I had a Commodore 64 in the early 80's and loved it! Ive still got it with a load of games and the last time I got it out of the attic it still worked! In Dungeons and Dragons though some of the monsters and snakes are invisible and aren't supposed to be which makes it harder!!!0

Well, just to keep this off-topic
I started with a BBC B with cassette, then a very whizzy Amstrad 6128 (colour with that random sized 3" disc) with a bit of CP/M thrown in for good measure a multitude of upgrades added including an external 3.5" floppy, EPROM boxes all sorts, then from there directly onto Macs, a beautiful but hideously expensive Mac II with colour inkjet way back in 1990; then a 486, Mac Quadras, Pentiums, PowerMacs; have 2 Macs and 2 PCs at present. 0 -
Im not a techi, far from it - but I always thought Dell was a starter computer and snobbishly ignored it, buying all sorts including the much heralded mesh. After my last Mesh lasted all of one day and spent the next two years of its life going on more holidays than me - I dumped it, even though I had 3 years further warranty as the stress wasnt worth it.
I needed a puter quick, I went to Dell through quidco, bought a decent desk top with big discount and cash back. It arrived, I had a blue screen after a day and ominous clicking from the hard drive.:( I rang Dell, the phone was answered in a few rings (amazing, as Id spend a day redialling Mesh with any probs). I was prepared for a big argument instead I got a big apology and a new puter with all the trappings arrived in 3 days.
Since then, any queries and they are answered immediately, any probs and they are dealt with efficiently. Ive been very pleased with Dell.
Have had 2 dell laptops now and I too have had great service from them. For the everyday user I think dell are a solid choice. Plus, dell offer ubuntu instead of windows and are largely compatable with most linux distros.
I would like to build my own desktop one day though, simply because I am a closet geekMortgage £120K, monthly overpayment £600, 18 years and £100K saved0 -
I'm looking for a laptop under £300 but to run Vista Home Premium it looks like I will be struggling to get anything powerful enough in this price range.
It's just for e-mailing and browsing the web really and is to supplement our desktop.
As it will mainly used from a desk I'd prefer at least a 15" screen,
Uptil now I've managed to get it down to 3 choices
Acer Aspice 5920 £367 Amazon
Toshiba L300-1AQ £339 Staples
Fujitsu Siemens Esprimo £370 E-Buyer.com
Dell look great but aren't cheap, all of the above have a far higher spec really in the way of the type of software I would use.
My desktop is a Dell running Home Premium
Any suggestions welcome a.s.a.p. as there could be murder done if we don't get another computer soon0 -

Hi All,
I am looking for a new computer for gaming purposes. I am currently playing warhammer online so a good processor and a 512Mb graphics card are essential. Seen some good ones on ebay but then they seem to come from dodgy companies.
Some people have recommend I build my own but I wouldn't know where to start.
Any help/ideas would be welcome. Looking to spend in the £500 - £1000 range.
Thanks,

You don't need a "powerful" computer to email and browse the web
Any laptop sold today, including the £150 UMPC's, is capable of that much out of the box, although at that price is unlikely to have Vista HP as standard
If you do want VHP then a machine with loads of rams will be ideal..0
