WHICH computer - for anyone looking to buy one!!

If you are going to purchase a new computer and you plan on using photoshop then i would recommend a Mac. You mention that you want your computer to last a long time, Mac's do this; One of my friends uses Leopard on his G5 Mac and it quite fast!!!!
Mac's also depreciate a lot less than PC's do!!!!
I have also found that photoshop runs faster on a Mac, my mate has a sony vaio - 2GHz dual core and 2GB ram - i have a 2.16Ghz dual core and 2BG ram and mine runs much faster. Mac's also have iLife, and you get none of the rubbish that comes preinstalled on a PC. Yes macs are more expensive but they are miles better than an PC!!!!
What PC/Mac do you want??

My first computer was an 8K Commodore Pet. I was sooo excited. This was sometime in the last century of course. Several decades further on I am on my third laptop after a couple of desktops, and trying to decide whether to get another or a desktop. I want a bigger screen but not a large numb box containing the gubbins sitting on my desk.
What is the largest screen available on a laptop/notebook that doesn't cost an arm and a leg? What is the smallest desktop? I have looked at the Dell Hybrid thingy which is neat and I might consider it but it's expensive as it doesn't include a monitor.
All suggestions appreciated.0 -

Thanks for that...erm...what comes pre-installed? My last PC...er and the one before that...and the one....&c. came with nothing on the disks...at all! I install the software (and OS) that I want, which could even include leopard, apparently, excepth I'd then have to re-source all the software I have accumilated...and find mac equvalents...which is quite hard for DX10 games (don't mention emulation)
Writing this litle note on windows 7 x64 beta (free) using mozilla firefox (free) so quite a happy chappie at the moment...I'm sure it won't last...which is why I'm gonna dig a game out and test it out!...
edit- juste remembered...my (wife's) Tosh lappy came with a load of rubbish preinstalled (MS works etc..)...which may be why I immediately reinstalled the OS!Utinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0 -

erm.. AIO computers are great, but harder to upgrade in the long term. Again, the Mac argument comes in, as they do last longer, and need less upgrading than the average PC (in my opinion!)

If you want a big screen without all the clutter, you might consider an iMac.
Hi Marty
Thanks for the suggestion. I looked at a picture of the iMac and they certainly seem the last word in unclutteredness! I didn't get as far as looking at the prices yet but I expect they are not low. However, be that as it may what about the operating system. I have always used Windows, and wonder if it would be difficult for a dyed-in-the-wool Windows user who sometimes needs her hand held even after all these years to learn Mac speak without too much bad language and hair pulling.

Well everyone is different, but I know quite a few people who have switched from Windows to Mac OS X, and all of them have found it easier to use. Apple have a few online resources for new Mac users such as Mac 101 and Swtich 101 (which is specifically for people switching from Windows) and if there's an Apple Store nearby, they'll be more than happy to show you how to use your shiny new Mac. You can also run Windows on it if you really want to.
As for the price, they start at £782 which I guess isn't cheap insofar as you can buy much cheaper computers, though you can pay a lot more for a similar PC with an all-in-one design
One thing to bear in mind is that it was rumoured they would be updated last week with NVIDIA chipsets, and this didn't happen, so it might be worthwhile to hold off for awhile and see what happens.0 -
