Lightbulb Demise!

  • Can anyone advise on an "instant start at full brightness" equivalent for when I run out of 100W tungsten bulbs? Preferably not too expensive.

I use these 25W compact fluorescent bulbs:

They are much better comparison to the brightness of a 100W incandescent bulb than the 20W ones.
They light up almost instantly (<0.25sec) when the switch is turned on, if the room is very cold they take a minute or two to reach full brightness but normally they are a good brightness from the start. I find the warm white colour of the light to be fine.
I have had to replace a couple after 2 to 3 years of a few hours use a night, so less than the 8000 hours life quoted, but not bad for the price.

I have no issues with low energy bulbs yes they do take a bit longer at times and maybe not quite as bright and some are more expensive like candles. But I been using them fro year and I rather save money in long run

I want a bulb for my walk-in larder. It doesn't run long enough for running cost to matter but I do want to be able to see what is in there without waiting for it to "warm-up". I've adapted the lamp to take two tungsten 60W's at the moment. I shouldn't have let myself get caught out with the withdrawal of the 100W ones, I shan't make the same mistake with the 60's.

My issue is that it's hard to find a good strong energy saving lightbulb for uplighter shades.

I currently have a 30w spiral energy saving bulb in my uplighter - perhaps the uplighter is absorbing most of the light, but I'd expect it to be brighter for a 150w (might be 125w) equilivent.
Everybody is equal; However some are more equal than others.

I've just had a scout around the DIY sheds and the 100W incandescents are all gone!

Just bought 10 off t'interweb and sets of spares for my uplighters/spotlights etc. I do use the energy savers, but they are rubbish for many situations.
  • Just bought a pack of 6 from Poundland ( Don't ask the price ) if you are struggling to find bulbs. Most of the larger retailers are now out of stock.

I have 5 lights on dimmer switches downstairs which are not compatible with the energy saving lights. The switches will presumably need rewiring if the incandescent bulbs aren't available?

That's the biggest problem for me: I can't be the only one affected by this, surely?

You can get dimmable energy savers, have a look on screw fix direct. However, I do admit, they are more expensive than a bog standard bulb.

I thought they needed a different type of dimmer switch, though?
