My 4gb of ram is only showing as 2558mb

I did read it objectively, it was saying that windows 32 bit can't use 4 gig of ram properly...while snow leopard, being a 64 bit OS, can, and there is no 32 bit version of snow leopard, so ner. The piece seemed full of smug, and very little actual content :?
I just missed the point ?
As to the rest of the series...erm...I'll leave that for a rainy dayUtinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0 -

But any idea why the 4gb is not seen as that, i know the 32 bit could only see 3gb but the Sp1 download pack was to fix this.
Windows Vista originally reported the memory available. So with the 32-bit version able to address 4 GB of RAM, some of which was mapped to memory on graphics cards, disk drives, etc, the operating system reported the amount of system memory that could be addressed. On a work PC with a 256 MB graphics card installed, about 3.25 GB RAM is addressable for use.
Service Pack 1 introduced changed this in response to confused users who thought that the amount of available memory should be reported as equal to the amount of memory installed. So this would report 4 GB of memory installed, but this does not change the amount of system memory that can be addressed.
If you want to use more system memory then a 64-bit version of Windows Vista would allow all 4 GB of system memory to be used (or more).0 -
I've just done as CHR15 suggested, (thanks), and I've come up with the following info. It doesn't look too good to me, but I'm a bit of a technical klutz, and I'd be grateful for any knowledgeable opinions.
Installed physical memory 6GB
Total physical memory 3.25GB
Available physical mem 2.23GB
Total virtual mem 6.70GB
Available virtual mem 5.49GB
Page file space 3.54GB
Available memory 2.276GB
As an amateur looking at these figures, it would seem like most of my 6GB is wasted, not being used, or not able to be used. Is this correct? Is there anything I could do to utilise more of it? Thanks in advance for your opinions, they should be interesting.0 -
Shows i have 4.11gb0

the solutions are
1.forget about it
2 get a 64 bit operating system
the 6 gig (nearly 7) is virtual memory
Crikey...just had a look at mine...8 gig virtual memory...then again...there's 3 operating systems running on my machine concurrently (1xv vista64, 2xslamd 64 (linux))Utinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0 -
Install a 64bit version of Windows. If you have Windows Vista, you merely need to get hold of a 64bit installation DVD and you can use the same serial number as the 32bit version uses. Unfortunately, you can't do an upgrade and would have to do it as a clean installation. As an amateur looking at these figures, it would seem like most of my 6GB is wasted, not being used, or not able to be used.
