Penny I wouldn't call them irritants in the washing as they are fully washed out of the clothes during the machine wash. They are only irritants if they get on your skin if you are using them for cleaning and you get a rash or something like that.
In that case I don't understand how it is that borax, washing soda and vinegar rinse out and cause no irritation, when modern washing detergents don't rinse out and remain as irritants
But great that it works for you :T

Thanks Natty68 - we do have a Wilkinsons close by so will give it a try. As my eczema is quite bad at the moment and I am having hospital treatment, I will try just about anything. I will certainly give it a go and see what happens.0

I think it's because Borax, Washing Soda and Vinegar are natural products that contain only one ingredient. Whereas modern detergents have lots of ingredients, some of them designed to cling, hopefully to the dirt but nothing is perfect.
I also know that cold water doesn't get modern washing powder out of clothes very well. Or at least it doesn't in my washing machine.0 -
I'm trying my first load without washing powder/liquid. I have to say that nothing in this load is actually very dirty so perhaps not a fair trial; I'll try it again when I've been gardening or something!
Maybe we wash things unnecessarily, though. I read an article many years ago suggesting that we all wash too much and are obsessed with artificial smells to cover our normal scent (which is not unpleasant). The author wasn't suggesting that we dont wash or bathe but just that we seem to have become uncomfortable with our own bodies... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

I'm trying not to read all of the Victoria Farm book at once, just to read the parts relevant to the programmes I've seen, iyswim, but its so tempting just to read it all through.... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

I have an original one that came from my Grandad's...I have had it hung in our bathroom ever since our girls were little...I often look at it and it brings back such happy memories of my Grandad:T
There's another one I remember being hung in my Mum's bathroom...'John and Mary thought they knew much better than their Mummy's..they ate their tea with hands not washed..now both have painful tummies'....or something along those lines. Does anyone else remember it?
We love watching the The Victorian Farm.A family that eats together, stays together
