What are my options?

Im moving next month to N. Ireland and although I have been told my house is in a "broadband enabled" area I jave just checked it out and have got this response

"Our initial test indicates that it is VERY UNLIKELY you will be able to receive 512Kbps or 256Kbps broadband service due to the very long length of your telephone line. However, your order will be accepted if you still wish to order. An engineer may need to visit who will, where possible, supply the broadband service. It is currently not possible to provide the 1Mbps or 2Mbps ADSL broadband services."

There are no cable companies in the area either :(

Does that mean Im doomed to slow speeds and that paying for broadband will be a waste of time?

  • The two others options would be satellite or wireless. The former is usually very expensive (very quick google search suggests £75 per month up), so probably not worth considering unless you need it for business etc. Wireless may be an option - there is a company called "Now" that has fairly recently set up in the UK.

I don't know much about the technology, but they have a postcode checker, so it might be worth having a look - it may not be UK wide coverage yet.

As for the ADSL, if it wasn't going to cost anything to see if it worked, it might be worth it. Do you know if you will be charged anything if the engineer turns up and find it won't work?

On the distance issue, it might be worth checking out http://adslguide.org.uk/ as they have a chat forum / message broad as well. If you know where you local exchange is / how far you are away from it someone may be able to give advice from their own experience etc.

    Good luck!
