Taking Your Number To PAYG From A Contract?

In a word, YES.
Have done this a few times with Orange.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
Orange will send you a new SIM card, and you can either keep the old number or swap to a new one0

I've seen on the Carphone Warehouse site that you can port your existing number to their PAYG service, Fresh. If you're considering PAYG, look at Fresh - it's 15p/min flatrate to any network any time, and 5p/text. You don't have to top-up a minimum amount each month either. I'm getting a sim card for my little bro as it's definitely the cheapest PAYG on the market. It costs £10 for the sim card (includes £10 credit), or you can buy handsets with the sim card.
At the moment, Fresh have got a promotion whereby you get completely free calls until Valentines day. They will credit up to a max of £100 to your account on Feb 14th.
