Any broadband providers via Sky phone line?

I currently have Sky TV (£17.50 per month) and Sky Broadband (gone up to £17.00 per month) via their Connect service as our local BT exchange does not have enough capacity for their free/cheap service. I also have BT line rental (c.£11.00 per month).

As Sky wish to keep me as a TV customer they have agreed to pay my telephone line rental for 12 months if I change from BT to Sky phone line rental. Great, I thought, as I also confirmed I am able to cancel my Sky broadband...however it is catch 22 as I can not seem to find a broadband provider who will connect via Sky's phone line?

Any ideas?

Sky's phone line IS effectively BT.....

Any provider that provides broadband on a standard BT line should be OK.

Sky would probably be your best value as a complete package though.

    Am I missing something here?

  • I thought Sky was BT too but they rent something called Local Loop Unbundled (?) from BT which is different.

Sky Connect broadband at £17.00 per month = v expensive, lots of others are cheaper, including thier own which is free to me as a Sky TV customer if they have the line capacity from BT.

I tried O2 first as I am a mobile customer you can get broadband down to £1.50 per month (via Quidco cashback, £7.85 if not) but they only connect via BT...as do Plusnet (£9.75) etc etc. I resent paying Sky an extra £17.00 per month!

£17 for decent broadband is nothing.

If you pay peanuts you get monkeys.

    You cant have everything.
  • try AOL or talktalk, then you can resent an 18 month contract and a mediocre (at best) service instead.

  • Thanks, will do. I think £17.00 per month for 2 Mb broadband is expensive.
  • ....why 2mb?

    Hi mb101blues,

TalkTalk broadband is free in certain areas when taken in conjunction with the telephone service. The combined cost for phone and broadband is £16.99 per month. The issue you have is if Sky have unbundled you (placed you onto an LLU connection). This involves the removal of your line from BT equipment in the exchange and connection to your chosen providers equipment therefore putting you outside of BTs network. This will only then allow a service to be provided by your chosen provider and no-one else. Some providers use partial LLU where only the broadband is provided via LLU.

The first step would be to find out exactly what type of service Sky are providing to you. If its full LLU then you will not find another provider that can supply you with a broadband service while you retain a phone service with Sky unless you use mobile internet. As they are offering to allow you to cancel the broadband I can't see it being a full LLU service you are on.

If its a partial LLU service for broadband only then you can not migrate this service with a MAC. You would need to cancel the service with Sky then move to another provider. Stand alone broadband is always going to cost a lot more than it does to take a service as part of a package and you might find you are better off staying with all of your services in one place.

Have a look at www.samknows.com and see what services are available to you (use the exchange serach to see who has what equipment in your local exchange). You could find that you'll save money by moving all of your services away from Sky even with them paying your line rental.

Just yell if you need any help - I'm not trying to push TalkTalk and if its not right for you or you can get a cheaper service elsewhere then I'll tell you.

    Cheers

Sky use the bt line, but if you are on any package other than connect you are connected to Skys own hardware.

In your instance you will not be on the unbundled hardware. Basically if you want to switch to another provider then you can as the line is a BT one.
