The lady who lives on her own ILONA known as meanqueen on this forum...
http://www.downthelane.net/
I can assure you that everything that Ilona did on the prog she really does in real life..she is well known for her frugality...wearing mens pants...asking for discounts in tesco etc..
Does this website seem to have writing over other writing, making it hard to read or is it just my computer?Penny xxx

Hi Ilona,
Thank you for taking the time to come here and telling us more about yourself. I really wanted to know more than the programmme showed - I am so nosey! I knew the TV prog would be fairly one-sided as they have their 'story-arch' to portray, even in a documentary. It sounds like you're a very well-rounded person and I'm sure you'll enjoy your retirement.
Very best wishes to you.0 -
there was a series on about ten years ago and it was called scrimpers and described how some people lived and how they saved money it was really funny eg -cutting the toes out of socks and using them as arm warmers, or unravelling knitted jumpers and knitting them back up again. Some of the things you would not believe but really funny all the same..0

But...I always cut the toes off socks and tights and use them as hairbands, wristwarmers, and in the summer they protect my wrists from nettle rash which I get in my eczema...the kids socks get the same treatment, and are used for when they fall and graze/cut their hands, and they dont need a plaster but they dont want to look at the graze.''A moment's thinking is an hour in words.'' -Thomas Hood0 -

My mother, sisters, ex wife MIL all used to unravel jumpers and knit them again. Usually when the kids had outgrown them they would add another ball or two and knit a larger one.
If you pop onto the green boards and mention this, they will say reusing something, the wool, is better than recycling it.0 -
