You thought she was me?

I hope you have not watched the programme because I do not look anything like her. Hope I am more outgoing as well.

She makes me look like a raving spendthrift. I love to buy stuff for my DDs and help out where I can - just make sure I get a good deal on it.

I am a Scot living near York and DH is a Yorkshireman but neither of us are as frugal as that. We are trying to save as much as we can but that is so we can move to a more suitable house as we get older and so we can help out DDs etc. One DD has been put through university , another is still at uni and the youngest wants to go in the next few years.

I did think it was sad when my almost namesake said she would love to meet her soulmate but would not pay the price of new clothes to go out for a drink etc.

When she said she wore boys pants because they were cheaper and wondered what the neighbours thought when she pegged about 20 pairs on the line I squirmed in embarassment for her.

I thought it was sad when Owen? in Wales said he did not live with his girlfriend and three year old daughter because he disagreed with how she spent her money.

Maybe I'm just shallow but the way the programme was presented made me want to "spend, send, spend" to reassure myself I could.

yes, that made me sad too - especially as it would surely be cheaper for them to live in the same house rather than pay out 2 lots of rent/mortgage. That would more than pay for his girlfriend's cushions!

apart from Owen mending his shoes with Duct Tape - I didn't really find anything that I don't already do (yes in the past I used to buy boys boxers)

The builder made me sad when he was talking about cushions etc and said 'I couldn't bear to look at something so pretty which has no use'. I mean, there's room in everyone's life for a little pleasure and there shouldn't be any shame attached to it - even if that pleasure is making your own cake or growing flowers.

I think his point was that it would give him no pleasure.

I can see his point (up to a point), I wouldn't buy a piece of furniture that would only be used to display ornaments. I don't see the point in having ornaments.

On the other hand, if you need, say, a bookcase I don't see anything wrong with buying a nice one.

I think a lot of men can't see the point in things that are just there for decoration.
  • I thought Owen came across as sensible.....though I'm surprised Health and Safety haven't pulled him up about his duct tape wrapped boots! But it's sad he and his wife live apart because she can't stand his moneysaving ways and he doesn't like her spending money on cushions, ornaments and candles.

The farmer though looked smug as though everything was a big joke....I felt sorry for his wife, especially when she said he doesn't buy her presents (apart from a chainsaw she got one Christmas). She looked wistful but resigned to the fact he won't change his ways!

I wanted to see a longer prog exploring why people are extreme moneysavers....is it because of global issues, financial reasons or do they just like being very frugal? I thought it was a 2 part prog about moneysaving but I see the 2nd prog is about shopping of a different kind.....shopping family members to the police when they commit crimes!

Did you not find it annoying though that they went looking for people in Scotland and Yorkshire, making it sooooo stereotyped? I am sure there are plenty of MSers/OSers - even if they do not call themselves that - in the South of England/Home Counties/West Country, no?

I didn't really notice that. However, I did notice that they were playing 'old fashioned Jewish music' (Klezma?) in the background. I did find that rather distasteful.

I'm also not sure why the lady with the castle was even featured. So, she lives in a castle, so what? She was very sensible in the way she spent money and kept to a budget. She certainly didn't strike me as 'tight'.

When cooking for visitors, she shopped at a discount store. Where do you think most catering companies are going to buy their supplies? Her home isn't meant to be a 'fine dining experience' and seeing as all food was 'home made', I'm sure the end product was excellent. Good luck to her. I'm glad they've shown that just because somebody is 'paper rich', it doesn't mean they are constantly quaffing champagne and eating caviare.
